I believe Randy has a ported 2252 of his own so I am sure he could tell you how well the 545 takes to porting. He has also built some strong running 346 models as well.

IMO the 346OE was a better saw than the NE even though the NE has a larger displacement. IIRC the OE was supposed to cover the retirement of the 242XP. I had both the OE & NE versions at the same time liked the the OE better sold the NE. Both of those saws have a failing in the design, in clearing/limbing use if they throw a chain they break the case on the bottom of the clutch side where the travel limiter is installed.

I also agree with Mdavlee the OE was good but not as good as the 242XP and nowhere as good as the 5 series saws that replaced it!

Dolmar 5100s is a very nice 50cc saw, but for peace of mind you have to tear it apart and glue the mains, a very large PITA!

That's about the ugliest thing I've read or heard about any 346xp, OE or NE. I thought they were pert near a cure for cancer?... And capable of treating:
Arthritis, arithmea, anxiety, baldness, bladder infections, chronic dry mouth, climate change, dandruff, drug use, exfoliating dry skin, fatigue, gangrene, hair loss, low blood pressure, malignant melanoma, narcissism, poor circulation, radiation poisoning, surgical complications, urological disorders, deep vein thrombosis, water retention... Ok, this got tough...

Hope it'll just pizz rev and cut wood.:)

Durability was never the 346's strong point. We used to do top-ends on the OE 346s fairly regularly. Lean factory tune and an intake boot air leaks killed more than a few of them before their time. The tree services loved them for their performance but hated buying new ones so often.

That's what they cult on AS thinks about them. I've ran ported ones from 5 builders and they may cut cookies good but other than that they suck for a work saw. A 261 stihl, 5100/5105, or 545/550 s better.

I don't buy new saws but if I did it would be a 545.

Got the urge for a 661 though.

He tried to make it to our GTG. But couldn't swing it.

I've had a few and never saw a reason to keep them over an 026 for the price difference. But now there are 2 346xp's for sale locally for $175 and $160... I can get more then that for an 024 or 026. Heck, there's even a beater for on ebay for $100 with no bids and only 2 days to go. Last year that would have been bid up to 250 by now.

Every 346xp I've ever seen has had a scored piston. If the owner doesn't know they think it has carb issues because it hesitates and won't idle right,

I think I'll keep this one as my sleeper saw now that the prices have plummeted. At least untill my 550xp is put back together. image.jpg

And the reason for all the scored husky pistons vs the simple stihl setup. And that updated metal snap clamp is just as prone to leaking as the half arsed plastic one it replaces. image.jpg

    So the 350 sticker makes the 346 with 359 setup a sleeper?
