Rain is messing with my schedule getting in the woods....whenever it is nice I'm busy, whenever I'm free it's raining harder than I can to sit through. Don't have anything I have to do this evening and it's supposed to rain. Been getting a lot of practice with the bow lately. Trying to send 20-30 arrows a day from 20-80 yards. After season is over I need to drop my sight housing and re-sight....my 80 pin is all the way at the bottom and I'm still hitting a little low. Windage is pretty much dead nuts now though.
I connected with a large buck last night. Waited 2 hours before I took up the trail. Looks like a lung hit deer, lots of very good blood for 100 yards. I made the decision to stop and get him this morning. Stay tuned....
Smart. Looks like a good hit. Too many times the thrill of the chase sets in and critters are not recovered.
Bow or muzzleloader? Well I guess your big gun season could be in.... I'm surprised you didn't find him within those 100 yards... Good luck this am!
Bow. I tracked him another 75 to 100 yards and the blood ran out. My buddy who owns the property is going to contact the neighbor so we can look there in a bit. He may have went into the big ravine that is there. Hard to tell without blood.
Well dang. Any bloodtrailing dogs around there? Not sure if it's the color in the picture, or because blood had some time on it, but the last pic you posted of blood looks darker (could be cause it was drying). Any chance you hit it a bit back, towards the liver? Any water near where he was going? I have had several deer, that were hit marginal to decent, go to water and find them in the water.
Probably flesh wound and no vitals. Sucks. Tracked too many like this. Even in snow when you can just follow tracks, it's hard to get another shot. I think the hearty ones survive this.
Seeing deer, just no chances. One decent buck this week in field. Beginning of season had 6 out in field. 3 were really nice. 2 avg. 1 needed another year. Tonight son texts me, "passed on a 7 point. Headed your way. Nice buck, one of the high guys ( we have deer with different genetics on camera). Im thinking he passed this buck up?! Its a decent deer from what I seen on camera. I heard the deer coming. Then I heard son shoot his xbow and some running then crashing through the woods away from me. Im like wth is going on. He pass on this buck to harvest a doe? I see the top of the 7 point antlers turn and look back. Son texts and says he just shot 8 point. I text and say 7 point coming my way, so I tell him to stay put, give time and look for landmarks of direction buck ran. 7 point came walking then turned and walked away. figures... So I go to my son's stand and find the bolt. Not much blood. I asked how deer reacted, he says tail up, didnt kick. Hmmmm.. not what I wanted to hear. I could tell he was just bummed and upset. I told him to stay put for a few minutes while I looked for blood trail. Not much of a trail but I could see where the deer ran. Blood here and there. Then some good blood, then a few drops. Finally saw some bubbles in blood. Gave me some hope. Some blood high on tree where the deer scraped. Figure he shot high because of the stand he shoots out of and it goes down hill. I sent him to get his brother to help. He was still upset. I walked around another 10 yards and saw this He came back and I pretended I was still looking. Then he saw him . He probably ran 80 yards. Shot was high but hit both lungs. Not much of a trail because how high the entrance and exit wounds were but his lungs were drowning. Sorry for long post. We're on cloud 9 over here
Nice buck! Congrats to your son, and you! I assume there was less blood before your pics, cause that's some good blood for trailing in those pics! Last buck I shot with the muzzloader, I would have loved that blood trail. Bullet didn't open, had very little blood, but I did find him.
