"Preppers"? are you one?

Life is just a game, we all end up on the compost heap one day.

 

Not necessarily saying you are...but compared to Jack Straw ....well...

 

I hadn't really thought of this as prepping, but right now I'm doing some things around yard to get ready for a trip next week, and this struck me as potentially valuable... Solar fence charger and associated fencing accessories. For those with livestock who need electric fencing or those who would get into animals (chickens, goats, sheep etc) because of the situation, both for containment and protection from predators. Could also be rigged up to provide protection from the 2 legged varmints for a variety of missions. And for those who think it would offer no help, you probably haven't mistakingly touched a hot fence before....

 

I think the most prepared people out there aren't saying anything to anyone about it. You've got to watch out for them. They're the ones with underground bunkers stocked like Noah's Ark with everything from seeds, liquid nitrogen, precious metals... and all the things the average tinfoil hat guy wouldn't even consider They're the ones in a real SHTF situation that'll make out like the oligarchs did after the USSR fell.

Edit: In 2020, with all of its wierdness going around, we failed to get our meat order to our usual supplier in on time. They contacted us, letting us know that they were soon to sell out, and they did not want us to miss out. They did not have to do this, there were plenty of folks in line to buy their beef, but we had a "relationship" built over a few years, and they honored that.

These types of relationships are best established in the fat years, so that in the slender years we already have trust.

 

In our area, the trouble will probably come from earthquake or tsunami which would cut us off from the mainland and supplies. We are so dependent on ferry and truck travel for everything. I found that getting supplies ahead is great if it is something you use regularly. When you change what you are doing (as we all do when time passes) something getd left sitting for a long time.
When we lived in a community where you only went out to shop once a week or two, I managed to always have enough on hand to keep going for a while if the shopping trip didn't materialize. Now that we live in a town, shopping everyday or so has become a habit. I am beginning to think I will have smarten up.

I still think the 'residents' would have problems though. You could spend tens of thousands renting a unit and then not be able to get there due to blocked roads, curfews or fuel shortages. And who would your 'bunker mates' be in the surrounding units? Could you trust them when resources started to run low?

Back in my teens and twenties I was very interested in survivalism. I read everything I could by Mel Tappan and similar authors, even though I live in the UK.

We've had supply chain shortages here recently - fuel, food, building materials and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide shortage showed how interconnected everything is. Without carbon dioxide the meat culling, processing and packing industry can't function. The carbon dioxide shortage was caused by fertiliser plants shutting down due to a massive rise in wholesale natural gas prices. CO2 is a byproduct of fertiliser production.

All this has started me preparing again, bit by bit.

 

Yeah you can have the best set up in the world, the best bunker etc, doesn't mean you'll make it. A lot will be based on the situation (emp, nuclear, natural, time of year, all kinds of things), a lot will be based on knowledge, skills, mindset, experience and preparation, and a lot will be based on luck. All we can do it try to be prepared in some way, both physically and mentally.

 

I’ve kept plenty of old manual tools, saws, hatchets etc……just in cas.

Yup me too…. I mean who would want an old milk separator hand crank..
I hope I never have to use gramps double bladed axe or 2 man saw.. or find too men that could run it for 6 hours

 

They were so much tougher back in the day!

 

Yup. Gramps worked a farm over by well seasoned 800 acres. No tractor, horses. Cut split and stacked 35+ cord a year for house and sugaring. No chain saw or splitter.. scary strength in his 80s
