    So I think we have now settled on poplar :) very good! thanks for all the help. great to be able to interact with folks who know way more about this than I do. incidentally I went past the remains of that tree at the curb later in the afternoon after taking those other pictures and someone else had grabbed the other pieces that were there. the hunt will continue, i like free firewood, who doesn't :D

    Looks similar to tulip poplar, but also looks like sweet gum

    I would go with catalpa too. Similar color patterns as tulip but not quite.
