I have seen up to 55% increase in cutting speed with a filed square chain from off the roll. Stock saws with good chain can beat ported saws with stock chain. There's almost more to gain on chain than with port work.

Mdavlee I agree. Im working on my filing skills but that Oregon CL half skip really makes my 362c sing. I wasnt impressed with the sharpness of CL from the factory. Just passing the file through the tooth to clean and deburr was a big improvement

No doubt that a sharp chain makes cuttn effortless...ive never used any other chain than stihl..found a place that makes loops fer .36 cents a dl so im pretty stoked bout that..:saw:

That's still pretty high. My local dealer is $1 bar inch and buying rolls is around $.20 a dl.

That's awfully close to dealer cost. He's making peanuts on a roll unless he bought it on a mass order program and got a big discount. .35 a link is beyond competitive here locally (33RS72 is getting close to $30 o_O) and pretty much matches what you can buy equivalent Oregon chain for from other major suppliers.

I can pretty much prove this true in poplar or aspen cants to. I pull up some numbers of untouched chain and some touched.

copy and pasting info from my website.

For you guys talking about stihl and oregon chain cutting speeds. I tested cut speeds of stock chains and machine grinded and atop square guide filed chain. I dont think I had a fresh loop of LG to try. The atop chain was oregon LP 058 goofy and square filed and then my 30 min square atop filed.

I was a little disappointed in my round grinder results I tested for fun too.

I found a nice clean 10"x10" very dry poplar cant in the barn that has been there for well over a year now.

Saw was a 357xp 7T running 93 octane 32:1 and a rich 13.8k. 3 cuts per chain, which allowed for the unseen knot hit and operator error in some of the times.

    Chains were work chains tested.

I know factory sharp chains are not the sharpest out of the box, but I wanted to have a base to go off of. So RSLK, RSLHK, CL, RS, factory sharp were tested.

    A. Stihl RSLK factory sharp..................................4.09...4.53 ...4.13

    B. Stihl RSLHK factory sharp.................................4.47...4.74. .4.28

    C. ATOP square sent in by Goran...........................3.41...3.38..3.34

    D. ATOP goofy sent in by Goran............................3.75...3.59...3.8 1

    E. ATOP sq my 1st try using new guide..................3.96....3.88...3.76

    F. Oregon CL factory sharp..................................3.88....4.20...4.25

    K. Stihl RS factory sharp....................................4.18..... 4.21....4.12

    L. Stihl RS grinder sharpened..............................5.09.....5. 06....5.07 didnt like the angles I tried

    M. Woodsman pro RC machine sharpened..............4.71.....4.84....4.75

I do like the 63 PS that I ground to square. Have not tried any of the roll of Stihl 3/8 square full comp. My friend Nathan bought the last 44 ft of square half skip from me. I need to try the 404 roll also. I found someone willing to make a road trip to Madsens and ship me a few rolls. Square CAD I do have an addiction.

I liked it and had good results. Not into square anymore so sold it. Trading all my new square files off now too. If we work out a trade. I have stihl, save edge, and about 4 others names I cant think of off hand.

That above chain won 2 1st place in stock saw racing in TN. Not the fastest chain by no means but good enough for me.

My atop was I listed in this chain build off. I didnt finish my chain up because it could be used for work too. This was a race chain build off. Someone here was A ;)

    10x10 poplar stock 3120
stock chain the average time for 3 cuts was 2.89.

    Chain A 2.47 2.28 2.40 average 2.38

I might be interested in some files. I've only used Save Edge since I can buy them in Ashland, a couple at a time. No shipping.

I've tried stihl triangular and didn't care for it. Not much edge on the side plate.
