Neither. Once I saw the posting was removed, I knew it was a lost cause. No biggie. There will be other opportunities
Just last week a couple friends and I were on the Interstate and seeing logs right next to the road. Such a shame they will just lay there and rot.
What's worse than missing out on free Craigslist curbside Mulberry? Missing out on free Craigslist curbside Mulberry TWICE! This is the exact same location from a month ago that I missed out on. I saw this ad last night around 8pm and decided to swing through at 5:30 this morning since I was passing through the area anyway (that's a completely normal thing, right? Pre-dawn hoarding? ) I get there under the cover of darkness to find all the Mulberry gone and a large pile of spruce rounds there, and a few horribly punky pin oak chunks. I hope the universe is enjoying the silly games its playing on me. This too shall pass...... like this opportunity did!
That sux. Early for you. Normally you hoard around midnight. Eric what did you do to anger the mulberry gods???
Mebbe it's like when you're pursuing a woman you're infatuated with... the more you chase, the more she pulls away. Yeah, that analogy pretty much sums up my yearning for Mulberry. Like muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone, it's time I stop chasing, sit back and let the gorgeous orange BTU goodness come to me instead
Where I am if a hardwood tree goes down in a bad storm anywhere near a road, I can guarantee that it's going to be bucked and taken away by someone local within 2 hours. Sometimes less. Even a large spruce that went down last winter and knocked the power out was gone in half a day with almost no trace. Meanwhile when I lived in the city, I could find Craigslist ads that were a week old where people had sugar maple sitting on their curb already bucked and ready to load without any takers.
The universe is on a roll with me this weekend. I had this 1.25 cord stack of ash that I was saving for my uncle who needs a little extra dry wood. He’s coming over tomorrow morning to pick it up so I took the pile down and staged it at the end of my driveway. I also loaded up my truck with all the shorties/uglies in advance. So then with all that accomplished, I decided it was a good idea to check Craigslist for free wood. It was then that I saw that 3 minutes down the road from me is a very large Norway maple curbside for the taking. Agh!!!! My truck is full now, and after I get done moving wood tomorrow I have other things to attend to.
Or you could pick up some nice looking pine if you're into pine. I know I wood (get it?). And some other stuff that looks interesting. Ash and maple below: This one looks like mulberry I think. Not sure.
In order: white pine, white oak, ash, and tulip poplar. The ash is one town over from me... I already have over 2 cords of white pine/spruce/hemlock. The white oak looks tempting though. Wish I wasn’t so busy lately, too many projects going on. That’s why I was tickled pink by the curbside mulberry. Load up and go within a couple minutes. Unless I can find the extra time I may have to lay low for a bit. I haven’t scrounged much this year and with burning season almost here I’m getting restless
Looking on FBMP I just sent a message to someone with some pine. Heh heh. He has about 12 truckloads if I were to take it all. I love me some pine.
I hear you there. Dry pine is the cat’s meow when you need heat in a hurry, or burning down deep coal beds. I’ll definitely take more (once my current supply starts dwindling)
I like it for kindling too. Well the guy responded. Look how much there is. I won't be able to take it all but I'll take all the *perfect* pieces that's for sure!!! And it will be a great break-in for the newly rebuilt 034S! Woo hoo!
Wow you weren’t kidding. That’ll keep you busy for a while. Looks like that’s an older picture, maybe from the spring? Wood should still be fine, probably less sappy too.
I happened upon a random 2’ long roadside chunk of mulberry the other day and had to scoop it up of course. After cutting and splitting, I noticed how wide the growth rings were. This was one happy mulberry! Must’ve been open grown in someone’s yard. I could tell from the crotch remnants that this tree was pollarded at one point as it had a ton of smaller branches radiating from the main trunk.
Maybe it was growing out of a manure pile! Or along the road where a truck hauling Miracle Grow crashed...
I know they’re a weed tree and grow fast, but wow! There’s one 2 houses down from me growing out of the neighbor’s shrubs. It’s probably 8-10 feet tall. Funny thing is if I go online and check out the Google Maps street view from 2019 it’s not there. Makes me want to plant one somewhere in my yard. Here’s the cousin to mulberry, (Osage Orange) growing in my stove room. It’s also growing fast. These pictures are only 10 days apart, and the plant isn’t even in full sun more than an hour a day.
