My BIL called this morning and asked if he could drop some big oak off. He had a company take down a huge double oak that was leaning over his shop. He burns too but isn't set up to tackle stuff this big. Told him we'd help him get it cut and split then he'll just take what he needs. Also the pile in front and the fresh pile in the background
Where's the big stuff? Is it behind those little twigs that are lying on the lawn? Does your brother in law have any brothers who are married to sisters of mine??
I can see why he gave it to you. You are generous to help him with that heavy undertaking. Good luck.
Now there are some real gut busters! Looks like something I should be rolling onto a carriage and running it through a big saw! It will make lots of great firewood too.
I wonder what diameter the big stuff came to be? Looks like a handful. Cord counter just jumped a couple of marks to the right. Good luck and be safe!
I was in a hurry unloading and didn't have a tape on me. I'll measure the two big logs tomorrow morning. In the second pic you can see the stump section in the middle of the front pile. It's well over 36"
No complaints about a delivery so long as you have the equipment to deal with it. I would guess 39" DBH before it flares out. Pretty much a 3+ cord tree without the <6" limb wood.
I think your pretty close on the DBH measurement paul. I asked him where all the smaller stuff was and unfortunately the company chipped everything close to 8" and under
Hook up with that tree company and you might begin to think otherwise. 16" logs look pretty good when there is a bottomless supply of it.
Oh i agree but the amount of limbs in that tree was probably close to another 1/2 cord or so. Over the years Dad taught me that there aint no sense chipping up stuff that we can heat our homes with, while not breaking our backs working with. "Run it all through the chipper" used to be my mentality when i worked for the tree service (before i burned 100% with wood). That meant less logs we had to toss in the dump at the end of the day. That was before the company had skid steers and a loader. They got those machines after i left of course.
WOW! Either of you do any woodworking? I'd have those big logs sawn. You'll save your back a little and still have plenty of firewood. Nice score.
