I am cheap, and haven't paid for any wood in years, but this oak is tempting me.... I offered 50 for it. If they don't bite, would you pay 100 for it? Looks like maybe a cord?
How is your existing wood supply? $100 to pick up and split what might be a cord that still needs a couple years of drying seems high.
I definitely wouldn't pay $100. This isn't much better than wood I've seen for free on Craigslist around here. I've actually snagged 2 different batches similar to this that required a little chainsaw work. Most listings unfortunately are too far away to pursue.
White oak definitely makes my ears perk up, but you seem to have no trouble at all scrounging all sorts of wood in your area for free. I’d let it go. I think there are better things to spend $100 on (or simply save towards) It’s possible that in the spring the ad gets reposted for “free oak” and then you can swoop in.
I'd offer to haul off their yard waste for $50.00 to save them the dump fee. Sit tight & see what happens is my thought.
I am with Cash Larue here where I am that is a bargain. That doesn’t sound like a deal for you though.
They didn't take the offer of $50....The person messaged me Tuesday morning, asking if I had cherry smoker wood. Of course I do. They said for 2 wheelbarrows full of split cherry, I can have the oak. Done deal. I picked it all up today. About 3 truckloads in total. I didn't load my truck heavy because my yard is soft. Most was cut between 15 and 19 inches, some longer limb wood, but almost a cord worth I think. I will post pics later, uploading is not working.
You made out well on that deal! No money spent, and 2 wheelbarrows full of cherry isn't much of a loss at all considering all that nice white oak you're gaining. Good negotiation
That's pretty good the way it worked out, and in my opinion that's the way things should be. Good job!
