This is the time of year when the katydids are really making noise. Yet, I have not heard nor seen on yet so I'm wondering if anyone else has. I will say that because we are in the woods, we do normally start hearing them later than others more out in the open but we are already a week into August and not one sound of them. I look forward to hearing them every year and the old saying around here is that 6 weeks after the first katydid sings it is fall. We always would see a couple when combining wheat and oats but because I no longer am involved with farming that is out for me.
My wife said she heard one last night but I listened for a long time and never heard one. Sleep with windows open too but no katy.
They are here heard my first one a few days ago, I leave for work at 3 am when I heard them only a few but that means summer is over fall is on the way.
Sleep with windows open man that would be a money saver!!! Havent done that other than a record cool day a week ago since like april!! Even though it may be 68-72 over night it doesnt get that cool till like after midnight here and the humidity is so bad your sheets feel sticky and it feels way hotter than it is! Y'all are lucky in that regard!! I am hating my last $300 power bill!
Now that you mention it I haven't heard any here either. I forgot all about that familiar summer noise until I read your post.
I agree clemsonfor...it was 94 here in ATL today and then it rained just enough to give us MORE humidity! We have gone to using a window AC unit in the bedroom so as to not jump up the power bill. BTW, I haven't heard any 'dids here either.
We ought to look into that with a poor insulated home but with my son now we would needs 2 . Those things are so inefficient that 2 of them would cost what it does to run the little bit of home ac we use at night. GA has cheap power compared to SC. At my farm we used like 6 days of 2 small window units last month. It jumped the power bill from 27ish/month to $75!!! No body lives at the house just if were up for a weekend or something.
I've heard them ans seen them here. The orchestra of the night. Even stuck one in a girl's hair here at work.
We don't run it all day, or all night for that matter. And its only my wife and me. Our main AC unit finally quit working last year and it is probably 15 years old, so its not worth replacing till we sell the house. I think it adds maybe 10-15 a month.
We do sometimes close the windows at night; like last night it got a bit chilly. As for the air conditioner, we have had it on exactly one time so far this year. We also have had only one day when it reached 90 degrees. That is one day too many for us.
Whoops. Forgot to post this. Funny that I made this thread and then last night. We heard the katydids! They are back to singing again.
Was 95f yesterday...been unseasonably cool this yr though. 2 or 3 years ago we had like 5-7 days in a row over 100f!!
