I'm hoping to track what we burn, where it goes to other than our stove, and which stacks should be used next..... I made a schematic or our postage stamp sized lot, and added outlines of wood piles, house, garage etc., on an excel spreadsheet. The wood piles outlines include date, origin, stack size, and year to be used. With all the stacks and different places (not like we have a big field ...) this is an easy way for dear wife to know whats what. Anyone do similar? note: no pic downloaded, security issue errors. Sca
I take a picture of a stack when completed, giving me a date so I know how long it has seasoned and which to use next.
90% of my wood is in totes. When I’m done filling a tote I put roof on and use a paint pen to date it. I move totes on occasion so it’s easy to keep track of. Before winter I will put all 3 year css totes in one area so don’t waste time looking for dry wood when it’s cold. Other than that I put a Talley mark on garage doorway with pencil for each tote I use. 10 totes a year is my average so far.
Nothing special here, othe than a sharpie. I write the date the stack was filled on the ends of a few different splits. I'll also write species - RO - red oak WO - white oak RM - red maple SM - sugar maple A - ash AP - apple E - elm B - beech C - chestnut S - sassafras I stack species by dry times. Makes for easy identification of what rack is next to be emptied. Works for me!
Never have wrote when wood was stacked but I know which wood pile is which. Yesterday I put some wood in the barn that was cut in 2015.
To that point, because of the way our property is arranged, we have 7 stacks to keep track of. For me thats easy enough. But, I kick the bucket, and she will be left to figure it out. Sca
I take pics when the stack is done and go to them if I cant remember when it was processed. I kind of just start at one end of the stacks and go to other, refilling as I empty. By the time I get back to where I started it will be 3 years. Only hang up is the oak I have and if it will need longer then 3 years.
For some reason my booze-soaked brain can recall the necessary statistics involved with my firewood addiction. Just don't ask me to remember my anniversary, wife's birthday, or the names of my friends' children.
I always keep it all organized, until we start getting back to back 2+ foot snow storms. Then I just start burning whatever I can get my hands on. Its like the old boxer’s saying… Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the nose.
I too take pics with my phone that date stamp when cut, when split and when stacked. They all get moved to a folder on my laptop labeled Firewood and I sort by date. When it comes time to move wood to the basement, I reference which area is oldest. And I'll typically pull a split or 2 and check MC just to give piece of mind.
Brad, make sure your reply isn't in between the [ ] 's (quotes in blocks) of the original post. If it is, it doesn't show right. Actually it show up in their original quote.
All of our "keep wood" goes from left to right. Once a year's worth goes into the garage, its replaced. The "sell wood" is kind of the same, just much less concern.
I have enough room to stack a years worth of wood in different location, makes it easy to remember where and when I cut it. I measure it carefully to keep track of yearly use (have records back 12 years when I bought this place). This also is info for the girlfriend where to get wood when I'm away. I usually weigh and date a few pieces in each rank, just see when it stops loosing moisture weight, also for my own fun and info.
If ya really wanna geek out, you could weigh each load as it goes in the stove, keep track of said weight, and record the high and low temp for the day too...
I happened to do just a thing the other day. Built a spreadsheet that kind of mapped my different stacks. Incorporated an automatic summation mechanism, and also a way to color the cell based on the age of the stack. Green is almost ready to burn/dry and red is freshly stacked. My totals are in face cord quantity
I have 5 bins in my pole barn and I keep moving in a clockwise direction when I use wood. When I empty one bin I refill it the next summer. The bin to the left with wood in it is #1, #2 is to the right of #1, #3 is straight back from the door, #4 is in the back right corner and #5 is to the right of the back of my splitter.
Oops! Sorry about that! I usually check after i post. Sometimes i dont see where the cursor is when im typing. I cant type to save my life either!
I'll label with a sharpie on a split or on end of stack on pallet or rack. Either month/year and/or whats in the stack.
