Last weekend I went over to my parents and cut up a big ole walnut that uprooted in the field across the road from them. The landowner gave him permission to cut what he wants. More of that later..

    Here’s some pics.

Had no way to drag a log out so firewood it will be. Just didn’t feel like millin.
And after buckin’ that, I spotted a nice standing dead ash. So I dropped it.

Today I helped him bring two trailer loads home. Still probably 2 more left but it was small stuff that he could handle.

There are many dead standing trees around this field. Dad wants to get as much as possible so I’ll definitely be felling a bunch more soon.

Some really nice looking firewood. Good job on the felling and bucking it all up. Congrats on jumping on that.

All the wood is for my parents. The dead standing I'm guessing is ash. I haven't drove around to check. I hope it is because I figure this will be burnable by the end of this season. I've been really trying to talk them into getting an insert. They love their open fireplace but are realizing all the heat is going up and out.
We split some stuff I wanted to get ID'd. Forgot to take any pics. It had a menthol/minty kinda smell fresh split. Kinda looked like maple on the inside but the bark was not maple-like at all. It was heavy heck. We had to lift rounds together.

Possibly birch with the minty smell. Its is heavy when green and dry.

My dad was reluctant to get an insert until my sister and i got him one installed for Birthday/Christmas gift. His birthday was Dec. 24. Still complained about it. They do get very cantankerous in their old age. I used to CS all his wood for him too.

I told dad my guess was birch. I'll definitely get pics. I think they are both realizing how much work it is to burn 6 cords a year. He's 76 and it's too much even with the help I give. I've been trying to motivate by loaning him the splitter instead of doing it all.

Lol! That ash took all 24" of the bar I had. The base pieces I had to noodle in 1/4's so dad could lift em'. I save the real big stuff for my own stacks. ;)

I agree Dennis. It’s good and solid too. I’m really hoping there’s a lot more of it. It’s nice to be able to fell it right into a clear field & park the trailer right beside.

Lol! If it were red oak, I’d be hauling it home. Dad doesn’t have the patience to let wood season more than one year. Another big plus on scoring dead standing ash. I really would have liked to mill that walnut. It really isn’t great for firewood, do love the smell though.

It was such a nice day today, I decided to take 1/2 day vaca to run chainsaw. Got there and the neighbor fella was rakin’ hay. So we just cut up and brought back the remaining wood already laying. 3 loads.

That’s the field in the background. We are moving wood about 60-75 yards.

The smell didn’t get me to cherry at all. I’ve had plenty to go from too. Definitely that wintergreen/minty aroma. I was sniffin splits as they got thrown. It was fer sure a new to me species.

Next pics will be trees laying in the freshly cut field. Can’t wait…. DozerDan357 did all the work today. XS365sp got the go last time. Spreading the wealth I think I’ll take the 2150 next time. Dads 2245/2250 got sharpened and the rakers filed.

Not currently. That saw has a 16" bar with .325 semichisel on it. Probably best for him but we'll see after I learn the ins and outs of this grinder.

    Absolutely beautiful day!

Definitely back birch. It burns HOT, BTU similar to oak but dries faster! We have lots of it in our woods and have burned plenty of it too. Always a good score.
