Depends on how picky your application is. Some things you can virtually bolt down anything that will fit. Not so much if repowering something like a garden tractor.

Deere had the same issue with the 317. Then they released the 316(Onan)/318 and everybody forgot about the 317 and it's engine woes. Kohler designing an engine for those loads and going splash lube for the big ends was ridiculous.

I wonder how many cheap used lawn tractors are kicking around the interior of Alaska?

You can use 2 single tower coils in place of the twin. Just parallel the primaries. Slightly reduces point life but not by much.

Not a problem just add a spark arrestor and occasionally pour the sparks back into the coil.

    Probably very FEW !
Up here. Especially 20 to 30 years ago. If it runs, I usually gets run to death !
Easier to get a new engine if one really goes funny bag.
The mechanic came and checked the engine out. The coil is shot it gets hot just from having the hey turned to on for a few minutes . And it only intermittently let power thru and he said I should get new points and condenser and plug wires all at the same time. Which all makes sense.

I did find this one online. But. I'm not sure the shaft is the correct size or length. And, it's a bunch of money !
So I'm going to pursue the electrical parts.
I will probably need a new engine some time . But for the time being this one did work good. Ie, it turns logs into lumber.
I'm also not sure on the height of the V twin engine. I need to do a bunch of measuring and checking spec's.
I also may need new parts on the hydraulic system on the mill. But at this point it also still works.
It would be great to get enough lumber sawn with what I own now to do some of the projects that I need to. Including building a mill house. And get the mill inside it and set up properly.

Basically instead of one expensive coil with two spark plug wires you can use two cheap single spark plug wire coils. Then take some wire and on the little terminals connect both coils together and to the engine the same way as the original coil.
    Clear as mud ?

Have you tried Rods saw shop in Fairbanks, he may have a solution. He does small engine repair, has a ton of mowers at his shop.

Work has been more than just busy this week. I'm going to see if they are open tomorrow as we have to go to Fairbanks. I called too late today when I got off work.

Rod didn't have 1 in stock. Had to order it. $269.00
I doubt the engine cost more than 500 dollars when it was new :picard:
I had him order it and paid for it. I tried 6 count them SIX different places on E Bay this week and not 1 of them would send one here. Wouldn't even let me pay for extra shipping to get one here.
Y'all down south don't know what that's like. You can have anything sent right to your door. Maddening !
