I have a friend who shares my addiction to all things firewood. In fact his land is where we split and store most of the wood we get (he has many acres). Saw a craigslist add for free firewood and I was unable to go after it but he did. Turned out to be hickory - I am thrilled with this score! Hickory is my favorite.

I'd split that small & make into smoker wood bundles & sell it for about 10X what a cord od good hardwood goes for. Excellent score!
Yep, Hickory, Cherry, Apple if I can get it & Sugar Maple. Not going huge on those yet till I find a couple more local outlets. It's a bit fussy because they want it about 1/2 green & small splits. It's a pita to make, but hopefully in a couple years time I'll corner enough market to make some decent $$. The campfire bags are on track to gross maybe 10K this year, so there's certainly a market. Between that & fuelwood I'm gonna run through my 50 cord pretty quick. I'm starting to scale up some this fall and I'll try and really bump up production over the winter. I just picked a third splitter tonight.
Isn’t smoking wood supposed to be around 25% - 30% moisture? Do you sell your smoker wood with or without bark ?
Yeah that's a nice score for sure...my biggest Hickory was a shaggy that had limb wood darn near that big! Too bad I was too inexperienced and naïve to CSS it for 2-3 years...a lot of that got burnt pretty green in an old inefficient stove! Some of the last of it may have been pretty dry once I got to it though, sure is great firewood...there are a couple more of those HUGE ole trees in that same woods yet, but I don't wish to CSS them anytime soon, they are just so majestic that it's a shame to see them on the ground...the one I cut was a storm blowover...I thought it kinda crazy that it was that particular storm that got it, since it had weathered many many others that were worse...tree was still healthy too...I think the ground was so wet the roots just let go...tallest tree in the woods.
Yes, moisture about 25%. Most like it better minus the bark. I usually sell the center for smoker wood & the outsides for fuelwood.
Wow that looks absolutely delicious! Awesome score! Never had the pleasure (or displeasure not sure) of splitting hickory. How does it split? Hydro or maul?
