I have been using Starlink since March, while it was still in "better than nothing" beta. I am very pleased with it so far. At the beginning the speeds were around 20 Mbps on average, now they are about 60 on average. Sometimes I will see 120 or so, and sometimes 20, but generally it is pretty close to my average. Downtime, while it was an issue at the beginnng, is a non-issue now. My install location is surrounded by trees, but I still found a suitable location for the dish. I'll be glad to answer any questions from anyone who is thinking of going to the dark side as well. Oh, cost is $99 per month, and the dish cost me $500, I think they are still the same.
Some people despise Elon Musk. I've got my own opinions, but I don't think they are widely held by some. Edit.. We were on Hughesnet for about 2 yrs when we bought this place.. Not much good to say for them .
I confused starlink with skynet for a little bit. Too early in the morning to be poking around on the forums with no coffee!
The internet supplier I have is $25 a month. It is through a local university. Not sure of the speeds, but I know the TV can be streaming, the laptop can be in use (FHC commonly!) and so far, up to four phones in use at the same time using internet. Yeah, thats good enough.
Yup. My review (other than the quip about "the dark side") was on the service, rather than the man. He does tends to alienate people, and make fanboys, depending on the point of view. Totally different service and technology. Hughes is generally disliked (I have never had it), Starlink is much better technology. If I had any chance at that, I would be on it! The only Internet I can get is satellite based, or cell based, which has proved inadequate for our use and location. Starlink will not be the best choice for those who have other non-satellite options. It will likely be a significant improvement for those on Hughes or similar networks.
Yep. I'm not a fan of most of what Elon stands for. Then again for all the dumb things that he says, there's one or two that actually make sense. The starlinks biggest issue is cost for the equipment. The 99 a month is a bit pricey too, and both of these costs will come down with time
Sounds like Elon pulled the plug on the solar roofs though. Good idea, poor execution. So, very elon-esque.
You are not alone in that thinking. He does make some outlandish claims/statements that he often has to backtrack. But I do give him credit for his ambition with SpaceX.. he's far surpassed what the SLS program has done or offered.. yet again another over budget and extremely delayed gov't program. Doesn't hurt that my employer manufactures bearings for his engines. Yeah, the upfront costs and fees are silly high, but it doesn't seem to be a problem to many people. Another example of him throwing stuff at the wall to "see what sticks" Some things work, others don't. His "truck" was/is hideously stupid, but that doesn't mean he won't have buyers with deep pockets, and little common sense. He may not be the best business man ever, but I do seem to recall a certain "great business man" that bankrupted casinos and hotels. He's definitely got the gift of gab, PT Barnum would be proud. Edit.. From my limited perspective, I also think the Mars colony is overly premature, and those that talk of terraforming the planet have little clue as to the depth of such an undertaking. But, meh.. let them go for it.
WWW was quite interested in that, but it was kept house only. Ummm, roofers will not market a product that does not train and authorize distributors. Nope, no incentive, I can't imagine a marketing team discouraging sales like this, I have to wonder if it was intentional. WWW mentioned it would have blown up big time, but the local contractors that know things for instance wind codes etc. know better than to 1-give away a job and 2-put their name on strangers from somewhere else designing/installing etc. Too bad, he was very excited a few years ago.
