Well the question is why not a bigger load. To be honest I am coming up on 71 here in about another month and I do not have the endurance to get more wood like I used to. When I was 55 I thought I was invincible. Not any more. Plus we are working around 8000 ft.
Yep this stuff has been standing dead for many years. It is really dry and ready to burn. Not many people go up there and cut down trees of this size because they may not have the saws for trees that big or a way to load it up and haul it out.
Nice set up you have for harvesting those big logs MG! What was the DBH on those? Do you harvest down to a certain diameter and leave the tops? What was the total haul cord wise? Some beautiful country BTW!
Well Brad I have not measured any of those trees but the bar length on the saw I was using is 27 inch and it was taking all of that when I was falling them. Yes you are correct on when we buck them up we cut about the 10 to 12 feet of the tops off and do not load them on the trailer. In fact I was cutting the tops up and loading them in my pickup and taking them home for me. The larger trees that we cut down in just one tree had enough to make one chord. So total we did 6 trees and when split and stacked it will be just shy of 6 chord.

Doing great work, lots of beetle kill in Snowy Range! Now all you need to do is stop in Saratoga, WY on the way out and grab a whiskey at Firewater Public House to go with that cigar.
I have never been there but I may have to check it out sometime. Saratoga is the opposite way from going home and I am usually dog tired. We meaning me and the BIL usually stop at Centennial for a shot of whiskey on the way home.
I am jealous of the size spruce your getting. I lucky to find them over 12”. One way to look at the smaller standing dead is I don’t have to split.
