Today my dad and I decided to tackle a 24" oak behind my shop that's been standing dead for a few years. It had a few really large limbs that i worried would come down on the kids and or equipment. I roped it about 20ft up and we tied it to his truck in order to coax it through some limbs of a nearby sweetgum. He pulled the stretch out of the rope and gave the tree a tug, hoping to shake off any widow makers up top. Then he walked behind his truck and gave the rope a tug with his hands to see how taught it was. I heard a pop back at the tree and down it came! All i could do was watch as it aimed for my walk in cooler. Because we weren't pulling on it yet, the sweetgum branches directed it right towards the shop and walk in. Thankfully the top was so dead that it just busted off when it hit the cooler and caused no damage. Then I realized how close i came to losing the 365 and a hard hat!!! Needless to say, I've dropped countless dead trees and treat them all with respect and safety. This one surprised us both. It broke off right below ground level and down it came. I hadn't even started the saw yet .
Happy to hear no major damage. Looking at that top pic that tree was pretty far gone. I'm sure you were s$#@&ing your pants when it headed for the walk in cooler.
Wow! You never know what is going to happen with that dead stuff. Glad nothing bad happened. You were lucky.
Wow I have to say I have never had one do that before. It must have been pretty rotted out. Sounds like you dodged the bullet this time.
Yea the tree was toast. I'm just glad it didn't decide to go while I had a ladder on it lol. And yes, as it headed for the cooler i just closed my eyes and said "welp she's a goner"
Haha thanks! I texted my mom and asked her what she's been feeding dad. Told her he pulled a tree down with his bare hands
Scary stuff and lucky too. Good thing you were clear of it when it let go. Looks like it was hollow and the sapwood had rotted enough. Glad the saw and cooler survived. A learning experience for sure...always put the hardhat on the saw when near the direction of fall!
I was just about to walk over to the saw when it came down. I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the top moving. Surprisingly it wasn't hollow at all. Just extremely dry and almost dust at the stump. Still some good solid wood about 10ft up which is weird. Haha yea next time I'll remember to put the hard hat on the saw when I walk away
