NEVER, NEVER drop a tree on a yellow jacket's nest! Job i did yesterday i felled a small standing dead maple and unknown to me it landed on a YJ's nest under a mound of leaves. To those unfamiliar with YJ's they nest in the ground for the most part and are most active late Summer into Fall. Didnt know it was there until i walked toward where the top landed and discovered the angry swarm of bees! Luckily i didnt get stung. To make matters worse i stepped on another nest 10' from the first.
What's worse? Disturbed bees nest, or finding metal with your saw? Both hide, and both to be greatly avoided
Wow.... thats something to high tail out of... Yea any wasp at this time of the year just are angry anyways... let alone getting a tree dropped on them....
I hate yellowjackets. I was cutting some logs under a wild cherry tree and the ground was loaded with fermenting little cherries; they are slightly larger than a BB. I was wondering why the ares was loaded with yellow jackets then I realized they were attracted to the fruit.
Them yj will curl up and the head end will bite you and the tail end will sting a at the same time. Usually the whole squadron will attack at once. When I was a kid I parked a push mower over a nest that got me. I left it running full throttle until it ran out of gas. No more yj problems. Now a days everything is designed harm proof so if I let go of my mower handle the darn thing shuts off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I assume it has the small bar that you press to the handle? If so, that's what big twist ties are for!
Great pics! You can actually see them in flight! Glad you came out on top Sounds like that tree dropped right in a mine field
