Rocky Mountains are $206 per short ton

Heartland is more, dear husband thinks it was ~~$250 per FULL ton.

    Comparable pricing either brand.

Local advice steers me towards Rocky Mountain, though they are different now. A corporation in NW Colorado bought the operations and now makes them, I question if these are even the same pellets as the old Rocky Mountian. Does anyone know the true story and if the pellets are as good as they used to be?

Supposedly the Heartlands are harder, less crumbling. Though they are shipped a much longer distance.

I cannot test any pellets til the stove is installed, likely in late Sept.

    Thank you for any input,

I've only burned Heartlands of the two mentioned. They were perfectly fine 5 years ago when I used them.

Not familiar with either but are you implying that there is a difference between a "short ton" and a "full ton"? As far as I know they should both be 2000 lbs. Metric Ton is 1000 kg or 2200 Lbs.. Long Ton is 2240 lbs.. good luck

Not sure what you mean by short ton?

A ton consists of 50 40LB bags. Some mills also ship 60/65 and 70 bag pallets to get more product on each truck load. So maybe the Heartlands have a higher bag count in theirs? Find out what the bag count is for each pallet. Then figure out what each bag would cost.

Both should do well, I'd give a slight edge to the Heartlands(higher density). But cost would need to be considered.

Apparently I am using a term from the 18th centurey LOL, according to Wikipedia, though it made sense last night :)

The first brand is 50 bags per pallet.
The second brand is 60 bags per pallet.

    (blush)

Thanks for the tip! Can you tell me where the source for them is? All I am aware of is pellets from the pine beetle epidemic.

You hit the nail on the head!! Heartland is 60 bags so either brand comes to $4 plus change. Sorry to confuse everyone using terms that dont apply. I google many things in posts that I am not familiar with to fully understand alot of posts. Last nights short/long ton post was a google that seemed to make sense at the time :) Your insight is pretty incredible. I was also able to find a few reference on Heartland from you in other places as well. Thank you.

I was wondering why dear husband looked puzzled when I threw out the long ton word!

well, not touching that one  , but any pellet dealer ought to have an idea what the specie is they are selling. Doug firs are arguably the BEST pellet out there, come at a premium, and most dealers, if they have them, will know.....a couple brands.....only two I am familiar with, because I am quite far from Doug Fir country, but, North Idaho and Okanagan are two of them. Is one of those better than the other? Don't think so, but some here may argue. As for your area, well, cant comment, my ex-inlaws live in Casper, but we aren't on speaking terms......sorry :rootintootin:

Don't forget Blazers. The one bag I burned last year "just to see" opened my eyes. I'm hoping I don't have to burn the other 29 bags I managed to grab during the shortage but if I do, can't wait to see them burn.

My thanks to you for the tip that allowed me to get the Blazer's. They may not be as good as your Okies Dfir, but they're a lot better than anything else around these parts, and I didn't pay the price your Okies sell for either.

You don't need to pay that price with your Harman. Pay the high price only once for a really good stove, then go pellet shopping for the best deal, saving with every bag, year after year. Same principal as having good and better insulation. I don't think I burned any junk pellets last year, but I never paid more than $4.40 per bag. Remember I switched stoves in the middle of the winter. The new stove gave me the heat I asked for, but none burned dirty.

Kevin Kevin Kevin...you have now given me a new cause...to bring you in from the dark side... I just might have to donate some sample bags for you to burn....so you fully understand what a truly good pellet really is...like well aged good single malt scotch...or so I have heard.... (Yes I know you don't drink...but work with me here)

Before I get deluged with everybody wanting the same deal.... Kevin buys several thousand tons of pellets a year and a good amount from me already, so if you fall into that same league, we can talk...if not, please don't waste the bandwidth asking.

Wildwest: Rocky Mtn, Hearthland, North Idaho should all be available in S Wy and all good pellets...

Subman... Blazers are an excellent pellet and when or if available thru the boxes at their everyday low price.... Load up as I suggested last spring when the opportunity arose...which you did, and good on you...

Savemoney... I totally realize after selling pellets in NE for this my 6th year that there are those of you that wear your fugality like a badge of honor on your chest daily and proud of it... if that works for you, good on ya...

    Biased? You??? :p

I gotta go with LW on this one. Your DF's are awesome(hottest cleanest pellet I have burnt since BM DF"S). But carry a stiff price tag here in New England. With the NI only slightly less heat and so little less ash content the average user wouldn't even notice the difference. What they will notice is the price. With the NI ranging from $15 to $30 dollars less per ton? AKA the dollar factor, I think the NI would win IMHO. Yes, You both sell pellets. But LW actually burn's them.

    Wild west,
If you can purchase Douglas Fir pellets for around the same cost as the 2 brands listed above? Please try them.

good ole J....your check's in the mail.......

Doug's DF pellet is dang good, as good as the NI's, just a bit more money....and that's fine.....here where we are, NI's aren't very common, only a couple of the best pellet dealers have them (but I'm biased).......

and FWIW, even though Doug is biased and chooses to live in a warm place where pellets aren't used, the guy knows his pellets pretty well.........

What pushes the cost up for ANY DF pellet is the transportation....not something we can really control.....rest assured, if youre willing to foot the bill for a VERY good pellet, you wouldn't be let down by either the Okie DF or the NI DF

      :zip: :p

    :pete:

Hard to find either down here! But I did source some. A bud travels all over heck and he found me some of the NI's. I liked them as they burned near what I found from Bear Mountains quality. I still would give BM an edge though. Mostly heat output(in my heap), But also slightly lower ash content.

Doug does know pellets, But lacks burn experience. There's a few things you'll see burning that you just don't get from lab results......... I would bet he uses pellets like incense sticks(aromatic material which releases fragrant smoke when burned.) to give his office that special aroma?? AKA smells like cash!! :D

Ok, I done thinx we did hi jack dis here thread good like. Only way we could have done any better is mention the word "BEER"!!
