Took three rows out of the shed and put them in the basement. With the two rows left over downstairs from the spring I now have five rows of hardwood down there. The last row downstairs I'll fill with the poplar and Manitoba maple at a later date for short fires when the burning season starts. Then I got my load of logs. My years- long supplier retired so I had to get a new guy. Asked for mixed hardwood in eight foot lengths and he brings me all red oak in sixteen feet. Happy to have it because I'm off this week so I didn't fight with him about it. Delivered Monday morning in the fog. It's been hotter than hell and humid for a week here and it's not going to get better for a few more days. Needless to say I didn't get a whole lot done. Didn't even get half a row done on Monday and by the time I stopped today I managed to get the row filled up. Here's a pic of Mondays dismal work. I also sold my old 3 pth wood splitter that I haven't used in years. A guy drove about 60 miles and paid cash for it tonight after he was done work. So we'll see how the rest of the week goes...
I was splitting some poplar I had cut down earlier this summer on a hot day and the neighbor went by on his three wheeler to his farm and turned around and stopped in. The first words out of his mouth were: You're the only guy I know who splits on the hottest days of the year.
I did roofing in the heat when younger but cant take the heat so good now. I see your a little older than me.
Yep. that time of year. Saturday I plan on filling up my indoor wood bin. It holds almost a cord. It takes about 10 ATV cartloads to fill it. It is supposed to be in the high 70's, so not too hot. I prefer to do it with help from my son, and now Saturday is the only day he had off with the start of football season. I plan on putting about 3 cartloads of shoulder season wood ( probably elm and silver maple) in first, so that way it is the last wood I use in the spring, because I never totally let the bin go empty during the winter, then a mix of ash, locust and oak, then top it off with elm and maple again. I always end up doing some firewood on the hottest days of the summer, as I only get about 2 hours a day here and there to get it done. It seems like a never ending project as my wife says. Those are some real nice sticks of red oak you have there. I wish I could get a log truck onto my property, unfortunately they won't make it up my driveway. So scrounging is my only option. It does get fun, like finding money somewhere.
Nice pile of logs. Well stacked on sleepers. Can you wait for cooler dryer conditions to cut or just wanna get it done? Not a fan of Summertime firewood making myself.
The sooner it's stacked the sooner it starts drying. I'll be burning this next winter so it'll get quite a bit of drying in before the cold comes and then more next year as spring arrives then summer. I'm also on a week's holiday this week so it's a good time to start. It takes five hours to cut all my grass and that's going to come back big when the rains come again. Weekends are too short to get everything done, so yeah, there is a sense of urgency on my part. And there's also no way I could have that pile sitting there and not at least be picking at it. If you build it they will come. The log truck driver built it and now I'm coming.
With needing it for 22-23 burn season i cant blame you for wanting it CSS ASAP, especially being oak too. Hopefully some cooler dryer weather comes your way.

Well , I went to the go big or go home camp. I checked the long range a week & a half ago, it showed upper 70's this weekend so I set up a processor rental for three days. Saturday to Monday as I'm on vacation next week. Now the forecast is 90 & humid till Monday. Oh well, the machine's rented & it's gotta get done. Hoping to get about 40 cord cut & split. Machine's supposed to do 2cord/hr. We'll see.
We want pics! Best of luck in the heat. We've been trying to plan a camping trip in state, but hasnt been ideal weather. Ever sleep in a tent when its humid??? Tough with the extended forecast as they seldom get it right!
I've got 1.5cord of ash quarters/halves to split. They look fine where they are, until cooler temps arrive.
We'll see, I've got my logs pretty well staged & some good help. I cleared about a 1/2 acre more trees & brush this week to make some extra room. I'm just gonna run it out in big piles & then move & stack later. Not much screwing around loading trucks or moving finished product I hope. I've 45' worth of conveyors here so we should be able to get wood away from the machine & piled high. I fully intend to run the pizz outta this thing lol. I'll get pics for sure Brad. Yes I have tent camped in this kinda weather, and hate it. Much rather winter camp.
Hotter than heck here too. Well, at least too hot for me to even consider woodn'. Nice stack of logs. I'd be hard pressed to not let the saws eat!
Stay hydrated - and at some point plain water isn't enough - drinks like gatoraid really help. One test I used for overheated when I was replacing my roof in one of the hottest Julys ever was to every time I took a break, read something. If it made sense I took a short break. If I couldn't make sense of what I was reading (common every day newspaper article ) then I took a much longer break.
