So. I happened upon a guy spring rakeing a gravel road the other day with an older JD 301 tractor . It has a loader on the front with a smooth lip bucket , ROPS and the spring tooth rake blade on the 3 point hitch. He was in my way so I popped the parking brake and ran over and complimented him on the tractor and the job he was doing . He said , Do u want it . I said YES , how much, then I had to run over to the truck and shut the pump off. Came back and he said . This is crazy ya know. I said , ya , but do u want to sell it ? He said you need a new 4 wheel drive tractor. I told him I grew up driving and working with tractors A Lot older than this one. That it was perfect for what I needed to do. I guess its 36 horse power. Looks its age but looked and sounded well maintained. 2 wheel drive . rear tires have half their life on them. . What do you guys think it would be worth ? I SURE DO NEED A TRACTOR WITH A LOADER ! I left him my name and number and he texted me today saying to come make him an offer. Said he couldn't figure out what it was worth. I don't know either. But I know I Really like it !
$3-4k? Depends on condition and hours...and what all has been done, or if it needs anything done to it. Have any pics?
Looks like this is the equivalent of the JD 1020 farm tractor. 1965 technology. Seems to be well-regarded. Are you sure about 2wd? Sounds like the rear half was also used on higher HP tractors, which is nice. Estimate above sounds about right.
Fortunately it is not the JD 1010, where they routed the steering shaft through the radiator. Dad has one of those abominations. I don’t have any experience with the industrials. PTO, I assume?
No pics yet. Yes it has a 540 rear , live pto. It is Definately 2 wheel drive. It looks like it weighs 4500 to 5000 lbs. Which is good for the little loggin I will do with it. Probably less than 40 cord per year. The Loader and the back blade/spring rake are the primary things I need at the moment. But also will maybe get a brush hog . And Definately a snow blower ! ! I have a good supply of used cutting edges from snowplow and graders. I can weld a shoe on the back of a cutting edge and put it on the spring rake as a Dolby / Mormon Bar. Until I can get a true back blade. It will really help take the chatter out of the driveway and winter road that accumulates by March. Even just the spring rake would work well for cutting the humps down and filling the holes. So Many things I can use it for. And it's size is just right for what I need. Thank Y'all for replying ! The plan is to go see it tomorrow after work and make an offer.
Sadly the guy decided not to sell. I didn't even get a chance to make an offer on it. I guess he figured out that he really Did like his tractor after all.
Or he went out and and priced a new replacement!! Sorry you did not get it, but like always something better usually shows up!
New tractors compact about $1000- 1500 per hp. Worse than buying a new car/truck. Anything over 25 hp is tier 4 emissions including the use of DEF. Those emmision parts have been causing trouble.
Yep, & the older tractors are starting to reflect that in price as people find the new ones being troublesome & parts not available.
part prices are killers even with out the shipping. pre epa tractors and even the tier 3 units pricing have been going ballistic.
