It’s relatively new... like 4-5 years... it’s a Frigidaire Galaxy model... I find that the regular cycle (60 minutes) personally is hit and miss... I run in the high heat cycle (90 minutes) which I have good results... but I also prewash....
Yes.... mine is hooked up to hot water... that’s interesting that yours recommended cold water... mine suggests even turn on the faucet till warm water is coming out before starting...
Our dishwasher is rather old and was a cheap all plastic model Maytag . 2005 I think. Loud as heck but keeps plugging away. I have a habit of washing pans and some things right after using them so it doesn't take much to wash them by hand. Sometimes I'll wash the few in the sink just because there are just a few. Old habits I guess. Like grabbing the chopping maul to split a few rounds because I'm only going to do a few and not make a big project out of it and roll out the splitter. Kids or extended family in the house would be a different ball of wax.
Yep I thought that was standard hook-up too. My hot water heater is set at 125* so it don't take long for the DW to get to operating temps.
Follow up, long story short I got behind on dishes and did not have it in me to do them the normal way with my manual prewashing. Stuck them in dirty (full load both racks) and did a rinse cycle, then ran "autosense" wash cycle (yes, had to change to both bottom and upper level sprayers and boost temp so over 2 hour cycle). Wow, they came out clean as far as quick inspection on plates/bowls/coffee cups (they are all white). I'll have to clean the debris collection cup more often but it beats the hand prewashing. Frankly I'd go back to my old garage sale washer with dial control even though we had low water pressure and I had to add pitchers of water LOLOL. Actually 2 of them, one in our mobile home than another in the cabin we bought. And, the phosphate detergent. This new stuff drinks rinse aid like it's going out of style. Thanks Horkn I'm going to try the vinegar in a ramekin.
Cascade Platinum pods are hands down better than the regular pods. Interesting on the rinse cycle. May have to investigate that...
We do absolutely zero pre-washing. Knock of whatever big chunks into the thrash can and send it to the dishwasher and pack the sucker full. We will occasionally have a few things that don't get clean, but 99% of everything is good to go. Bottom of the line Bosch model....about 6 years old. Use Sam's Club tablets and rinse aid. We also have a water softener.
Great thread! I didn't read the 3 pages of replies just yet but either my dishwasher isn't very good (4yrs old) or my expectations of a dishwasher are just too high, I am thinking the latter. We always scrape the plates and rinse all the plates till they are free of any food. I also think much has to do with loading it, sometimes we are guilty of stuffing it in odd ways so I don't think it's getting hit with the jets. It gets most things clean but there are often times where it don't clean a bunch of stuff. I read about turning up the hot water heater to help, but that didn't do much. I also clean it periodically as it gets junked up in there. I guess our expectations are to just stuff it with dirty dishes and everything comes out sparkling, far from that. Sometimes I just hand wash, comes out cleaner.
I pre-soak things like cat dishes since the canned food can stay stuck permanently. Also, if I have made scrambled eggs I have to scrub the leavings from cooking off (I cook the eggs in the microwave so don't use non-stick dishes). Interestingly, unlike some others, I don't have to clean out plastic dishes that are greasy. I tend to stuff the washer pretty full before I run it with plastic dishes stuffed above the regular dishes that are in the rack. I have to physically move the dishwasher (on a cart) to the sink whenever I want to run it. I run it every 1.5 days or so. My first portable, a Koldfront was pretty good but there were times it didn't do the job I wanted. The Farberware Pro appliance that I got last December does awesome. I have never used anything but the regular cycle. I use Cascade Complete +Oxy liquid. If I have to use something else, I can tell the difference (that was true for the Koldfront also). I have a small kitchen with very little counter space (There is 1.5' of counter on the other side of the sink and a small counter next to the stove that is opposite the sink). The whole reason I got a dishwasher was so that I didn't have to do dishes several times a day - especially during summer when the house was already hot and humid. It definitely saves water (I would be pre-soaking the aforementioned dishes anyway, so that isn't a consideration). The appliance uses 3 gallons to wash 1.5 days of dishes. Just doing my breakfast and lunch dishes by hand would use more than that.
Great thread. Our one and only dishwasher was gifted to some friends of ours years ago. I don't do well seeing dirty dishes stack up until the washer can be put to use. Really rather disgusting in my mind! There are 2 of us. It takes less time to hand wash after a meal than to futz, purchase, maintain, replace etc. a power dishwasher. My opinion only. Not to mention we live in a home that is smaller than most "cabin builds" I see being built these days on these sites. To each there own I say!
