Funny.........last night after posting on here, I noticed my GE ice maker/dispenser had decided to take a few days off without notifying either of us! I ended up "re-setting" it and all seems to be working fine once again this morning. (Thanks university of youtube and owners manual) Ice is dropping into the bin and dispenser is back on line!
Been reading... found another forum ... with a lot of information... confirming a lot of what I see on this thread and in my own mind (swaying sales people and agendas.. )....
As a heating, air conditioning technician and refrigeration technician, I can tell you that that is one of the biggest lies told by other people in my industry. That a new system will be more efficient and save you money. That's a load of crap. And I usually end up talking people out of changing there units. Yes, there are certain components that are slightly more efficient, like ECM motors, but you are talking about energy use being on 2-10% less than a system 20 or more years older. That's one of the biggest things I don't like about my profession......the liars..... I can't tell you how many times I was someone's second opinion, and I fix their unit for $100-$400. Then they say that the other company told them they needed a whole new unit, for $3000-$5000. Clowns .....
As I was going through the owners manual (of that GE refrigerator that came with the house) last night, I found a couple repair bills regarding the ice maker and thought to myself Great; gonna have to replace that! One was almost $500! There were another right around 100 and 150. The service and repair bills added up to over 1/2 the price of the refrigerator when it was new. With that info in the back of my brain, yeah....I'll be looking for another refrigerator and not have to wonder just when the ice maker goes awol for good! How ever, if I was buying a 3000-5000 unit, be assured that there would be an extended warranty/service plan purchased with it.
I have had that issue also. We shut the circuit breaker off, count to 10, turn it back on, problem fixed. Seems to be the fix for so many electronics. As long as it works, I am fine with it. Our frig seems to be running fine. I don't hear it running
Thank goodness for those like you who give the whole picture instead of just part of the story. I mean there is a time to replace appliances, and there may be underlying reasons that the owner may choose to replace as to repair, but the owner can't make the decision that is right for them if they are only working with partial information.
When it come to Heating and A/C. Trane! A close second......Carrier!..... The garbage........Rheem/Ruud. What do I install at the place I work at .....Rheem and Ruud......trash....... And it's because we want to have the lowest price if a customer shops around.
Update.. I really did get what I paid for . Had to take it back yesterday. They asked me at Lows if I wanted a midea fridge again. I said no thank you. Lows gave me a good deal on a Whirlpool.. Its all good so far. Its been a bit fun this week. I may start a washer thread. Had to also replace that 2 weeks ago .
I'm sticking with 18 cu ft, no fancy gadgets, minimum or no pcb controls, minimum sensors in the walls and doors, minimum digital plain jane fridges. The current one is 20 years old. The new ones may not last as long ( and is what keeps me from upgrading to something slightly more efficient) but I figure the less there is to go wrong the less will.
I installed a Goodman at my place...So far it has been great, but for as cheap as it was we shall see! Burnt up the control board because we had it wired a little wrong and they sent a new one free. It has a 10 year parts warranty which should help.
Well.... I got a email today.... so hopefully I’ll complete my part & get the check in a couple of weeks...... got it narrowed down to a few... but they all aren’t expected to be in til after Labor Day Weekend...
Really liking my Whirlpool.. I got about 700 dollars in it. Its stainless steel and the reason for that was its what they had in stock.. They asked me what color and I said I didnt care. The problem with stainless is finger prints show bad. On a funny note my old fridge opened the wrong way to walk to the counter easy . It was like that for years and I never changed it. Well I rehung the doors on this new one yesterday and I keep trying to open the doors on the wrong side now.
Sure must stink being without a decent fridge. I went a bit without and that was worse than no washer.
