Agree...I have the same truck (Cheaper version) and towing from Cleveland to Dennis's (Backwoods Savage) place in Michigan I got little over 9 mpg a pulling an equipment trailer with a UTV (4,000 lbs max). Although I did have Big Dave (brenndatomu) in the front seat, so that may have brought the mileage down a few points.
But only a tenth or two...totally worth it for the riveting conversation though! Besides, having an emergency response trailer electrician on board...priceless!
Mileage is definitely a trade off with 3/4-1 ton trucks. I miss the mileage my half ton 6.2L got daily driving, but once I put a load behind BBW it's worth the difference.
There's something about a clean, white, 3/4 ton truck that gives me all sorts of feelings. Good on you for going gas too. Why have a $10K timebomb ticking under your hood with a diesel? Those gas motors are plenty stout. I think my next truck is going to be a F250 with a 7.3 gas, in crispy clean white.
Time bomb is totally fine once you fully delete them. If I could ever afford a new one I’d have a long hard look at the 7.3 Ford gasser. It makes zero sense but I’m still a guy who thinks 3/4 ton or bigger trucks must have a diesel. That’s even working around them all day and seeing all the issues in a modern day diesel. A few weeks back I was camping and a Newer 3/4 ton silverado starts backing into the site next to us. I walk over and start taking to him as he’s unhooking, my first question was “when did you delete it”. His eyes kinda opened up and he told me all about it, I ended up “knowing” his tuner. 2015 Silverado with 9K on it, beautiful truck.
. I know a couple guys who wrench on them all day every day and they are telling me that even if they are deleted you still aren't safe. The pumps can/will have an unplanned rapid disassembly and take out the injectors along the way.
True story the CP4 is junk, bad fuel or run it dry and bad things are sure to happen. Even being nice to it plenty have exploded. Still worth it at the end of the day.
There are PLENTY of reasons why companies that run whole fleets of 1 ton and 1.5 ton trucks are going away from diesels in record numbers in the last few years
I just couldn't justify the extra cost on a diesel plus the maintenance cost involved in only one. Heard too many horror stories how about issues caused by the new low sulfur diesel. For the work it will be doing the 6.6L gasser will suit me well.
