Try to be the last one running it or near last. Make sure to rev it up several times and get oil to the bar chain real good before setting down to idle. If you can put left foot on left side of saw against it if you are right handed. Keeps saw from moving and bewteen legs for picking up. Snug rear handle of saw into right thigh area and make your cuts. Listen to motor closely to keep revs up in the cut. Do not push and pull it out of the revs. Doing so will cost you time.
Mark wood with crayon = red to see where you want to put 1st cut across the top.

Now go practice with your saw in a stick to see. ;)

I was slow to the wood cold start 1.3 seconds. The top guys are .7 sec to the wood.

Stair at the top handle when hands on wood. Also find a spot where your hand balances the saw square when lifting TH. That way chain hits the wood square to cant.

See the tape I used on my saws. Where the black is is where my middle finger would hit on cold start racing and balance the saw perfectly.

Practice changes overs till you can do it in your sleep.

    Uploaded on Mar 18, 2010

Stock 3120xp running 9T and work chain in 11" x 10" round poplar for fun. Was suppose to be just 1 change over to start the year off. But I was having fun and got carried away with practicing the change overs. Got pretty interesting each time I had to step to make up for the shortened log. Big Smile.

    Griz..
    Watch that vid closely...
Notice hoe he didn't let the powerhead rest up against the wood, but was careful to keep plenty of bar out the front.
That's why it's real important to keep that rear handle nested in your right hip/thigh area..
And keep a wide solid base under ya...
Everything Cut4fun has mentioned is spot on...
Practice, practice!!! Even the day of the race!!!
