Just got off the phone with Consolidated Communications. Got an install date for the fiber next Fri, the 23rd. $70/mo for the 1st year (that's w/fees I was told) for the 1Gb speed.

Paying a tad over $100/mo (with fees) for Xfinity 400mbps now (just internet). Rep did say they don't have a price for after the first year yet but if it goes up to call and they will "get you another promo". Not sure I really believe that but happy we'll be saving $360+ a year over what we're paying now.

Lower cost, faster speed (up & down) and no data cap (Comcast is supposed to put theirs back in place starting in Jan).

I've done that a lot with Xfinity since the 90's. Every couple of years they try to raise the rates by $40-60/month. You just have to be willing to make it thru the sales pitches (hey, we've got a promo that adds xyz), stick to your guns and go thru about an hour of bullchit. Naturally every once in a while they have to raise the rates some, but I never have to take the huge jump they try for and many time got it for what I had been paying to that point.

Seems the last couple of years they have gotten much more reasonable with their existing customers (or maybe they just got tired of hearing me whine, yell and threaten to go away :D). Last time I had to call and complain was when I was working at my last job 3-4 years ago.

We have Spectrum here and they just raised the price of cable and internet to $199/ month. No way! I'm getting rid of cable all together this week. Just the internet, and some streaming if we need it. Nothing but crap on nine hundred channels anyway! Internet will be about $70/month.

That tends to work if you have a double play or triple play. Having just internet, it goes up $3-$5 every couple years. We've had just internet since 2010 and the cost has gone up about $30/mo since then. We pay $90 but the fees & taxes bring it up over $100. To go up to 1Gb speed is around $110 before the fees.

I would love to see a scenario where it becomes a true a-la-carte for TV services where you just pick the channels you want and pay a couple bucks a month for each channel. It seems most cable channels show repeats of years old shows most of the time. Like now for cable & streaming services to carry local channels costs you $20/mo for the retransmission fees they have to pay. Fortunately we get 44 channels over the air with the 2 antennas in the attic.

You are lucky to be able to get OTA channels. Where I am at there is no reception (even the reception maps for the antennas agree with that). Although I live in a valley now, which explains the no channels. When I lived on a ridge 2 miles away from my current house, we could only pick up 1 VT channel, and even that had really bad reception.

12 of the channels we get are PBS (3 from WGBH Ch 2, 5 from WENH Ch 11, 4 from WGBX Ch44) , ABC duplicates with Ch 5 & Ch 9 (plus their MeTV sub channels), some parts of the year pick up Ch 8 ABC in Maine and 4 are Spanish language. All the Boston stations come in great, course they all have their towers in the same spot.

There is a good YouTube channel, Antenna Man, for info on antennas and such. Basically if you're more than 60 mi from the tower reception can start to get spotty and terrain changes really hurt signals. The new standard , ATSC 3.0 (aka NextGen TV) isn't required to be the standard for 5 more years. There are some stations broadcasting ATSC 3 now but it does require a new tuner box or TV with an ATSC 3 tuner. Signal is to be stronger, better over terrain changes. Antenna Man is in PA, he did a video in Pittsburgh (one of the few places with a station broadcasting ATSC 3 now), he was getting great signal & pic.

Crutchfield has a good FAG on ATSC 3 on their site.

This is what most maps say

    OTA TV Channels available.JPG

This one is overly optimistic for UHF & VHF and most likely requires that you live on the south or east side of the Thompson Hill.

    Yeah..
I remember when QAM came out... you could just plug your set in
and you did not need a "box" if your set had QAM..
So we bought two tv's w/QAM.
    Worked awesome.
Then.. the cable company went to a total scramble signal,
    to "protect us"..
So we got three DTA boxes... the size of a pack of Marlboros at $1.99 each added to the bill, of course..
Several years later, they upped the rental, to $4.99 each.
of course the little DTA boxes cost them maybe $5.
Now they went up to $7.99..
So just think... we paid for the boxes probly in 4 months.. YEARS ago...
People that sign up now, pay for them in one month..
Cable companies are bandits of the worse type... they know you will use them..
