I don't have a way to get a good picture but my wife and youngest son saw this too. I've been cutting and splitting a big oak that has been dead a while. List side one inch is soft and punky with white and purple mold and or fungus. To night I pulled in after dark and parked next to today's split wood and a whole bunch of the fungus wood was glowing blue-green. It only glows on the fresh split surfaces of the wood. Not the original exterior surface of the trunk. I've heard of foxfire but I thought that was a mushroom that gre out of the wood that glowed.
I have seen this as well ,but it has been years since, Never really thought much about what it was though , just assumed that it was some sort of fungus. Now I am curious , will have to do some google homework on this.
Just a quick search : The general common name for glowing wood, for example, is foxfire. For the particular mushrooms: Clitocybe : "Poisonous Clitocybe" Omphalotus : "Jack O'Lantern" Armillariella : "Honey Mushroom"
I’ve seen it one time as a kid. It was around the time the movie Predator came out. The ground glowed and we thought it was that aliens blood! Scared the hell out of me and my buddies. Cool to see, I’ll never forget it.
I find it often Warner. kick up some of the duff and go back in the dark. Seems to be prevalent around our fallen and rotting birch. really neat when you've disturbed a large area!
Last year I saw a several truck loads of wood mulch get dumped out around a driveway entrance. That summer after every rain the whole area of mulch would bloom in a small glowing mushroom. It was cool to see an area of half a basketball court glow at night.
