Well, I've learned a couple of things about used saws, people who sell them, loan them borrow them, and buy them. What I didn't understand is why someone would "give one away". If it was sentimental, it *might* be worth it. But it needs to be torn down to the cases, not just a top-end... It'd be my first "big"saw, full rebuild, and I could probably get it done for less than a chinesium clone (buying some OE and some aftermarket parts). WWYD?
Ouch! That poor thing got used up & then some. I personally wouldn't bother, but if you've got time you can fix anything.
Price is right...I'd at least tear it down to see what it needs...doesn't really take very long to get them apart...
Yep, definitely worth tearing down and fixing. Even if that case is busted, it’s worth it. Avoid aftermarket handles (too weak) and chain tensioners. Plastics are good as are Meteor pistons. I can give you a list of other parts that are serviceable. I’ve rebuilt quite a few 1122 saws; great design that is fairly easy to work on.
Cant beat the price if you have the time and knowledge to do that. Working on saws and fixing them is not my thing so i prefer to buy new (er) saws for that reason. Try and tackle a rebuild Fred and keep us posted. Lots of great helpful folks on here of you get stuck. Im thankful for FHC as a couple here have helped me out with broken saws. You guys know who you are! Owner didnt know its worth and didnt wanna be bothered. Check ebay sold listings for parts saws and you'll see what they can bring. I bought my 460 powerhead for $40 with compression not realizing the steal i got at the time. Some parts and work and i was in business.
Had to satisfy my curiousity and checked ebay heres a good one. Stihl MS 660 066 Magnum Chainsaw Power for Parts only needs Piston and cylinder Parts Only $425.00 Even if you flip it not a bad profit margin. Id flip it as id rarely use a saw that big.
I'd tear into it and see what is up. If you have the time what do you have to lose ? On the other hand for me anyways I don't buy anything but OEM parts and I have a limited amount of free time so it might wind up as shelf fodder. I frequently give away valuable industrial stuff all the time as I feel the karma thing is what frequently brings me the free stuff I like.
Yeah, I'm thinking this might be more of a long-term "restoration" than a repair (using OEM parts as much as possible). I thought about going big-bore/ported with it. The original owner is a professional faller, so it was already modded/tuned. But, it'd be worth more with "Stihl" visible on the side of the jug, and not sounding like a race-saw...
I know you can get HD/tall crutches 6'6"/350 lbs pretty easily/cheaply...even 6'6"/500 lbs is not that hard to find, just have to pay more for them...once you get past that I think you are limited to specialty medical supply stores...and paying up
Over 30 A from a 15 A outlet...uhuh... Maybe for a minute...if'n ya had pennies inserted under the fuses...
