Question for those with soapstone stoves...............Can I place a Cast Iron 5 quart pot directly on the Soapstone or should I place it on a cast iron trivet or even a square piece of soapstone???
I wouldn’t. Cast iron May bleed rust or iron into the stone. Seems the prevailing theory here is a pot of water does little to humidify the air in the room. When I had a steel/cast stoves I could tell the difference tho. My sister has an ideal steel. Couple winters ago she tells me her chimney is plugged. Her CM detectors are going off. I find that hard to believe considering I have t run a brush down mine or my mothers in five years. There’s nothing in there worth brushing out. Sure enough her single wall pipe is choked with this long fine hairy creosote. Never had seen anything like it. Someone on this forum hypothesized it was water vapor being drawn in through the single wall pipe from the big pot on the stove. It’s the only logical conclusion. Sis, mom and I are not using pots anymore.
We have soapstone counter tops. When we place hot pots, pans, etc... on them, it's amazing how the soapstone pulls the heat and holds it.
I put a soapstone steamer on my Lopi last winter for the first time. I had never seen water boil so vigorously. I bought a stove top trivet and no more insane boiling.
We use these on top of the stove: Soapsto... (woodstove.com) Not only do they work nice for this but when you get boots or shoes wet, just take the stone from the stove and put inside the boots and they dry nicely. They also work well for drying wet gloves. You can even wrap them up and take to the woods for when your hands get cold. Feels great!
I don't own a stove or have any experience but isn't it a bit close to the wall there? Should you perhaps tile the wall to protect it from the heat? Looks like that thing will be roasty and toasty! Beautiful.
