Have a good buddy of mine, just got into burning firewood and has been slowly building up his hoard. Had him over for 4th BBQ and was showing me a pic of a some wood given to him from a neighbor. Rounds have what looks like thorns growing out of them. Wasn't sure what kind of wood it could be be? Locust?
All I can say with any certainty is the wood underneath is oak. The grain and coloring on the thorny piece remind me of sugar maple that's been sitting a while. I've seen "thorns" like that in tulip poplar before but it doesn't look like tulip to me. I'd like to know what the thorns are, maybe branches that never developed? If Eric VW were here he'd ask for end grain pictures
^ what he said, but no idea about the round on top. A picture of the cut end would be helpful or split it and post pictures of the splits.
After I finished splitting the last of my BL this morning I had time before the sun got past the hickory. So I cut and split the last of my apple which is being saved for smoking. It has the same tits stickin out and appear to be from holes in the bark. I'll send pics when Mrs PMM gets back. I may have run into this before, but CRS is gettin in the way right now.
Hard to tell. As stated pics of splits would narrow it down. I have seen similar "thorns" on logs before. Maybe some type of maple???
Here are a few more pic's he sent over. I was thinking some type of maple as well after looking at the grain, looks similar to some maple I have
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that can indicate birdseye figuring. If you're not a wood worker, may not be familiar with the term. Here are a few pictures:
Not mine, just google search results. I do have some stashed away though. My favorite was always quilted. Whoop's near derail here. Sorry. I find these figured wood beautiful!
