That’s standard practice in a few places “over there”. I can’t remember why California can’t capitalize on the limitless water supply along their long coastline. Probably because it would make too much sense.

It can be done, but its very expensive to do...pretty much considered the last choice in most cases...

A couple quick reads makes the point that many are against privatization of that industry. (So and so’s proposal is too much money, but we’ll gladly overcharge you to keep the current broken system in place) Well yeah, The Man doesn’t want competition. So since The Man has plenty of spin doctor friends, he can sell the public on the idea that privatization = corruption. And that’s the end of the discussion. Continue bleeding Lake Mead dry, exacerbate the problem so everyone responsible for painting the picture of reality can stick to the narrative. Find problems for every solution and sell the package to the unwitting public.

I must admit that while there is nothing technically incorrect, I do find the argument a bit skewed.
    :wacky:

There are many costs involved with desalination, high energy demands, and 50-60% of the water is of a very high salt content, and things I read also indicate that certain chemicals are used as well. This is generally pumped back into the ocean, and can be detrimental to aquatic life, rendering some areas as " dead zones".

Treating the waste would also incur costs. But some of the byproducts could possibly make the effort profitable.

One must remember that we live in a "Walmart" society. No-one wants to pay $5 for "X" product, if it can be had for $3.

Like most everything in nature, humans will take the path of least resistance.

Until a problem requires an immediate solution, we tend to "kick the can down the road".

I think I'll close this post, as I see a "soapbox" moment concerning private vs public "solutions" if I continue.

Last I checked southern CA, more specifically San Diego had the largest desalination plant in the US. Little harder for Nevada and Arizona to have desalination...
