I struck metal on my first cut yesterday with a 28” bar on the 661 and hit metal two more times before surrendering. Tooth crushing full on hits. Today I went looking for the enemy. After splitting the 3 worst metal stained rounds, this is what I found. The tree was growing on the edge of parking lot used for tailgating, so there is no telling how much hardware got pounded in over the years.
Hate that! I went into a freshly pushed orchard once and hit high tinsel wire used to train branch growth. I gave up pretty quick. Was like hitting barbed wire. Any pics of those teef?
No I didn’t take any pics of the teeth. Hand filing a 91dl chain 3x same day es no bueno. Smushed the 72dl chain on the 371 too.
Been there done that way to many times Chud . Hit a rock in the bark last weekend when cutting up some locust last weekend, new Husky X-cut chain.
The 371 I was using had a fairly new xcut. Maybe 2 sharpenings from new. It got dinged so bad I seriously thought about tossing it instead of filing out the damage. The 661 had a similarly new rs chain on it. It cost way more, so it hurt worse filing half it’s life away.
Hard one to like chud. Aggravating to say the least. Even worst on the first cut. Happened to me many a time.
It was a buzz kill for sure. I didn’t accomplish half of what I planned to do. I had new chains for both saws, but felt compelled to sharpen instead of swap.
I use 12.5 gauge high tensile wire in my orchard. It is way HARDER than barb wire and has a tensile strength of 200,000#s PSI.
