I'm guessing the helicoil and JB Weld will do the trick.

I hope so. One thing I do feel real good about, is the Tsumura lightweight bars, I like to run. They are pretty darned tough, I believe, because it had a heck of a bow in it, and came right back out straight. Not my preferred method of testing one out, though.

The 462 should be a magnesium case unless Stihl has switched materials on me. Not impossible to weld but not the easiest either, especially since it's an oil-soaked casting and def not something everybody has experience with. I recommend helium in the gas mix, but that's not absolutely mandatory. If you have a good bit of experience welding aluminum, especially cast, you'll do fine. You're right about the filler, by the lb it will cost more than replacing the case half. You might have a weld shop near you that will sell a couple sticks.

Yep, I have welded it before. I managed a fabrication shop for 30 plus years. We did a lot of welding repairs. If it comes to that, I will hope that a buddy or two can find me a stick or two, and I have access to a Tig welder, or I can get one of the guys to do it for me. However, If I had to buy the rod, it might not be economically viable. Or If I have to pay someone to do the welding, the shop rate would kill me, probably. But I have sources where I used to work, that would probably help me out. I hope I don't have to go that direction. There's probably other ways to fix it. I might be able to machine a bigger plug and screw in there, and avoid the welding.

But sometimes it just better to go new, also. That tree sure got even with me for cutting it up.

    Don't feel bad it happens.
I was talking to a Stihl dealer here
He told me about a customer
    A businessman looking guy
That wanted a pro saw so he bought a 661 then a few days later he bought
    A 461
Then a few days later was in looking at
    362s
He asked are you a logger?
No I'm just trying to free up the 661
    I bought from you
It's under a tree from the first time I used it.
The 461 is stuck on the other side now
And I need another saw to free them both up.

Wouldn't you just quietly go to TSC and buy a $150 Poulan Pro to free your saw(s)?! o_O

Well, I didn't have to go buy more saws, because I already had them, but I just might have had to go to a third saw for some reason, I can't recall, right now. That's a good one, and probably true on more then one occasion.

I’m sure the dealer prefers selling saws, but it would be nice if he told him about removing the bar nuts.

Guy never said a word too proud I guess.
    Until the dealer asked him
    Why he was buying another
He had somebody help the guy
461 was fine but the 661 was in pieces.

Maybe you can get his # and make an offer on the 661 pieces. Dang can you imagine dropping $1100 and wrecking it first time out.

This was year's ago before the 462 came out
    No idea who he was.
I've seen all kinds of saws gett mangled logging
I use sub 100.00 saws for dead ash
    They are unpredictable.

It seems like most of the saws I hear about getting mangled were run over by the skidder, but I am sure misjudging the tree or log takes their share.

I messed up my 462, because I was cutting up an Elm tree trunk and I had cut compression first, like you would normally do, but it was in a Y, and I was basically completely thru, but then it closed up really quick and then rolled on me as it fell. The tree was already down and I had even cut several rounds off of the bottom of the trunk, before this happened. I should have cut past the Y and got the Y later, but I was hot and tired, being lazy, I guess.

Last Summer a spar went 90* to the direction i wanted it to go while my 460 was bound in the cut. Landed on it bending the handle and snapped the chain brake. Led to my to my 361 (practically a virgin) purchase from a member here.

    Still in the shop.
It took him forever to get the Heli-coil in that he wanted to use, but the case is messed up too bad for it to work. Now, he is going to try the larger stud bolt trick from an 056, and go to a 10mm? If that don't work, I will have to get a new half case. I am thinking I should have just bit the bullet and ordered the new half case to start with. But we will see. I guess it's not an emergency to get it back, as I still have 4 saws on line to use. And it's been so hot, I haven't been exactly wearing any of them out, either. Been doing a lot of brush hogging, instead lately.

Well, just an update: The hole was busted out so bad that I ended up having to order a new half case. So now, more waiting for parts. I guess the big positive is the saw ought to be good as new when I finally get it done.
