At some point, we're gonna slow down. There will come a day when i'll order wood and just stack it myself. But, getting others alongside, and using machinery where I can, will I hope, prolong that day. I will not loose any "man points" if I choose what might be the wiser route. Sca
That’s a great plan Brad. You gotta protect the temple for the long term. Back, neck, shoulder, elbow, knees and feet issues have forced me to work differently and smarter. Sitting next to a splitter in the shade doesn’t require much exertion. I split a lot of big rounds and use a 36” log rite and 18” pickaroon to assist in rolling and positioning the rounds and half rounds. My splitter has a large platform that reduces the effort required to keep big blocks positioned. I’ll keep making firewood on the weekends through the summer. Hoard on!
buZZsaw BRAD I had some rotator cuff issues from long distance swimming. You might try going lefty for a bit. It feels weird at first, but really good for your brain to switch it up and would spread the load with the other rotator cuff. I actually haven’t tried axing with my left yet, but I mouse and throw a football with the left these days. And those were the activities that used to cause my right to flare up.
I bust up the really big, heavy rounds vertically, into a few pieces. Then I lay the splitter horizontal and split the manageable sized chunks into firewood.
I’ve gotten a little inefficient in my processing. I cut rounds from only one log or so then drag them into tractor bucket or grapple smaller stuff first. Usually 10 - 20 rounds. Raise bucket to horizontal splitter height and pull rounds to me from bucket onto splitter and throw splits into tote or big bag. Done with that log except for too big from trunk end I roll those in bucket or grab with grapple and move near as possible to splitter. flip splitter to vertical, and split them up. Sometimes I’ll go two logs so I have 4-10 big rounds ready. Next log I do opposite. Rounds, load bigs, split bigs since splitter is vertical then load smaller rounds and flip to horizontal. This lets me process one full log at a time rather than a cutting whole bunch of rounds, then endless splitting, stacking a huge pile. Change of task comes a little quicker. I also try to run splitter and chainsaw out of gas when I can and just work with the one that still has gas till I run out of work or gas in the last one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That splitter looks a lot like my DHT with a few minor differences. The amount you can bust up in a short time is mind blowing..... Nice work.
Computer mouse… I work in IT. Even if it is your left, sometimes just switching it up can give you relief.
