So the same individual who was a little critical of my last major scrounge score allowing that I was acting compulsive about cordwood gathering....put me in touch with a friend who "had trees down in his yard ". Turns out that person "Joe" did indeed have trees down, felled and bucked. Prolly 6 cord. Almost everything there will need to be split on site, either maul or noodled. Hickory, oak, and ash. The yard is a little challenging to get into, backing in is the only way, and will be something i will do as infrequently as I can. Joe's friend has a front end loader that he would be willing to help with. So I am trying to think of alternatives to taking dinky loads with my tiny trailer. Trailer rentals so far turns up long flat trailers, im after short and deeper, and buying is off the table at the moment. Splitting everything, and renting a dump truck for a day might work, if i had bodies (and the loader to help). But its a good score, wood's been cut since fall, it will take several weeks to split and pile there. Pics next time I go out. Any ideas though? Sca
If there’s no big rush, use whatcha got. It costs less that way. Not real sure on uHaul and how picky they are with damages. Front end loader would be quick and dirty. It would suck to incur extra fees.
Know any landscapers with F350/450 dump beds? Can you take the toolbox out of your PU and haul more with trailer too? Half cord per trip?
They're a little pricy here: There's a guy about three miles away that rents short-ish dump trailers. He had one, now he has two. He doesn't seem to advertise anywhere, at least not C-list or marketplace. Just has them out on his front lawn. He must be doing alright with them as he's had them out there for about three years now. Probably a nice way to have a trailer that you don't use very often. Help pay for it. He has "rent me" and his phone number painted on them. Probably to get around allowable sign size limitations in residential neighborhood. I've used a similar model truck that we were able to borrow and with those short sides could barely get 3/4 cord in it. Which is a ittle better than a lightweight pickup.
See how much it would cost to get a 30yd roll off dropped at the score and dumped in your yard. Easy loading. Specially if you can get the front end loader help. And you can process at your house.
You know I did think of that! What I thought might be expensive would be the feed for picking it up and dropping it, to pick it up again. BUT, at my place, if they just opened the back gate before rolling it off, I wonder if the wood would just kinda slide out? Will deff check prices on that! Sca
I like the idea of finding someone with a bigger vehicle than mine. I know one, but that dump truck has more rust on it than viable metal. The tool box could go temporarily, good point. But then I wouldn't have my saws handy. I'd quickly become sick, lethargic, and socially withdrawn. Sca
I'm inclined to follow your line of reasoning. Just looking at the amount of wood there, and how its gonna get out of that yard, and the time involved...makes me start looking for ways to expedite. I should've had 3 kids. Then we'd get it done! Sca
It would easily slide. Having rented many a dumpster for work over the years and watched at the scrap yard when they dump a load of metal. Lots of tree companies do it that way.
I say use what you got. I used to haul wood in my old Toyota Yaris hatchback. I laid the seats down and threw it all on a tarp.
Funny, geo prizim here. No pics anymore....but filled the front seat, back seat, trunk. Not stuffed, but full. Sca
Had some developments on the home front. Gonna stick w/truck and trailer for the moment. Will post that issue separately. Sca
So-So. I've gone out a few times in recent years. I've used my wife's Honda HRV, which isn't large by most standards but it's the biggest car I've ever owned. A local tree service fellow drops wood at my house from time to time, so I haven't gone out scrounging in a while.
