Well, this was brought up about a couple of months ago between Dexter and Mdavlee. I had Dexter, help with giving me the layout on how these things kinda of go. Never done a time test before. But this is what I came up with. Its with a very fresh cut 16" Pin Oak.:thumbs:

The First three saws (036/562XP/665) used the same new chain. Then I switched to another new chain for the 046/660 cuts with the 7 pin and then went to the 8 pin set up with the same chain.

    Here's a shot of the Herd... (L to R)

    036 Stihl - Muffler Mod
562xp - MM Ported and Muffler Mod
665 - Stock and about 5 tanks of gas through it
046 - MM Ported and Muffler Mod
660 - Mdavlee Ported and Muffler Mod

I'll try to get them downloaded tonight and there times. Its interesting IMO.

Sorry, I did get them downloaded to photobucket lastnight while watching a movie. But I was tired and beered out from the long day. I'm working on it now.

    Here is the 036:

Times: 20.28/19.81/24.01 (I threw the last time out for the average)
Average Time of the first two where: 20.045
This is just basically the baseline standard. A very solid run and scenario for this type of saw.

    Here is the 562XP:

    Time: 15.2/15.3/15.33
    Average: 15.28
Very consistent. Its a very smooth handling and high rev'n saw. Which these time, I felt where very good. While running it it actually felt faster than the times showed.

    Here is the 665:

    Times: 18.58/17.9/16.86
    Averages: 17.78
This saw for being stock and only 5 tanks of gas through it. I felt did very good. Still love the sound of this saw and it feels very good in the torque area as your making the cut.

Here is the 046 w/ the 7 pin setup:

Time: 13.66/16.46/12.78 (I threw out the 2nd run)
    Average: 13.22
The first and last runs felt good, the second I was having issues. Love how smooth it runs and the chips it throws.

Here is the 660 w/ the 7 pin setup:

    Time: 12.46/13.11/12.71
    Average: 12.76
This saw is just a brute. If it wasn't so heavy, it would be a favorite to run more often. It doesn't rev nearly as high as the 046, but its got the grunt to keep it in overdrive with this pin set up.

Here is the 046 with the 8 pin setup:

Time: 12.81/12.71/13.63/12.76 (I threw out the 3rd run)
    Average: 12.76
This pin set up with this bar seems to be a right combo for this saw. It felt good in the hands as it cut.

Here is the 660 with the 8 pin setup:

    Time: 15.86/18.25/13.63
    Average: 14.745
The times were all over the ballpark. Operator error? Wood difference? or the chain may have been starting to take a hit with the other 10 cuts before it. But its still a blast to run. I've just never have liked how it runs with the 8 pin set up. Its seems to own the 7 pin setup a lot better.

This was a fun and interesting to do especially since this was way of out of my league. Especially going back and watching them all. We (Mdavlee, Dexter, and myself) were all really interested in the performance of the 046 and the 660.

Sweet saws and those forks homemade?

Now for the most important question, how do you avoid getting the cigar smoke in your eyes while working?

The biggest shocker to me is the 660 w/ 8 pin rim sprocket on it. I thought in that size wood, that the 8 would have been faster. Especially since that saw has the torque.

The 046 and 562 were the best, because they are the best :emb:

I'd like to see how your 362 does ported against the 562xp. . Is that 362 a new C-M model? Or the OE?

Yes, those are homemade forks, invaluable in what they can do...I was just relaxing on my last day of vacation and enjoying the beautiful day. The cigar was kinda of getting in my way, thats why it went off to the side....:zip:...

The 362 is just the OE. I think Terry should have that back here before too long. He had to shuffle a saw around it, but its on the bench. I'm really curious too. When I get it back I'll check it out...

Yea, the 046 and the 562 where impressive. But what was kinda of shocking was the switch between the 7 pin and 8 pin with the 46 and 660. Its like each power and torque bands of those saws are just perfect for that particular gearing. But you put that 660 in big wood and thats where she shines...

That is kind of odd it was slower with the 8 pin. I never tried it with an 8 so I have no idea. The video will tell more if you got it out of the power band or not. It was about the same spread between it and my 046. The 660 sounded a good bit rich also. What was it turning out of wood?

I'm curious of what my 460 would have done at the GTG in the Big Cant with a 7 pin?

I went to change the bar for cutting later, I had the 8 pin on when cutting the 24" Cant. I thought I have the 7 pin on. Since the big Cant was already busted down into separate pieces, I never got the chance to find out.

Good job Chvymn99. . These are the kinds of threads I love to see. Looked like you had a lot of fun doing it.

Hope your vacation was a good one bud!!

I'd like to see times on both of those saws running 7 pins with 28" bars. The fact that the 660 doesn't like the 8 pin tells me it might not have the torque like we think it should. Mastermind has said several times that the stock port timing on the 660 has the exhaust port way higher than he likes on a saw that size and that most certainly makes for less torque lower in the RPM range. Me thinks the 8 pin might be dragging the engine down out of its powerband.

Yeah that was a later mahle cylinder with high port timing to start with. The chamber was cut to get it down some but not as much as I would have liked.
