Well, we got the score. Land owner had some minor thoughts, and more wood handy that I didnt know about. Looking forward to scoping out the scene next day or so to get a feel for what we can take home. Kinda going back to the OP, what I was looking for: Hearing "life first" or a "reality check" from folks who share the same disability as I; holds much more weight than from a non hoarder. I've taken a gentle ribbing from friends about my cache in the spring/summer only to have them shamelessly see if I happen to have any "spare" wood in January after they bought some that's hissing and bubbling at them. Last laugh, I've had it.
I'd say "Loud & Clear." Then I'd just do it the hard way. I'm through with trying to justify my actions to people it doesn't impact.

About the same here...funny thing is I grew up just down the street and as a kid I thought we lived in the boonies!

Its pretty easy to find local free firewood around here. I could cut all day and load my trailer and never travel more than a few miles from my house. I only do so if its a wood I seldom get like Black Locust. There is a monster, and I do mean MONSTER Red Oak about 1.5 miles from my house. Tree fell over in a storm and the owner cut most of the smaller stuff. The trunk is at least 5' across. Thought about offering to cut it, but I really don't want to deal with that big of wood. There's got to be at least 4 full cords of wood there. The trunk is probably 25-30 feet long and there are also several huge branches with it. If I had a dump trailer I'd drive the Kioti down and load it up, but alas, no dump trailer. I also have Red Oak for days. If it was a Black Locust or Sugar Maple, or Shagbark, I'd probably be more interested. Maybe I should offer to cut it for a fee and keep the wood. Make a few bucks.
Same here...as I talk around, I have 3 or 4 tree jobs in the wings. And then a possible tree in Bolton! This score is all easy pleasy, and sitting on the ground since last summer. And the guy near the site will keep an eye on me, is a somewhat lonely widdower ('specially if he's keeping company with the likes of me), and knows may of the local happenings. I see him filling holes in my town history memory. We'll swap various flower bulbs and the like, maybe I'll bring snacks to share, and a pipe to smoke (capt'n Black). Most of this is close to home, near folks I should drop in on anyway.... Sca

You split them on the spot? Had some gnarly maple and cut it to manageable size, and some big oak that split nice. Still a lotta creative cutting though. Sca
First day on "the job". Picked up a few cones....this is a sharp.corner so wanted a way to warn folks we were out and about. Managed to park off the road. Cut 2/3 of a cord, hauled 1 very full trailer load. Scoped out and turned down a tree job....sweat a lot. Following recomendations to cut it all, and then haul as time permits. Most of it is under 18". So splitting some on site and cutting some to manegeable size. Will be a few.weeks of doing. Sca

I can "easily" lift bigger rounds to load and unload, but gets tough when big so ill quarter/sixth bigguns to make it easier on the old back. Plus i can tightly stack then better than when in the round. When i load the PU i really sardine pack it. Usually the Isocore works for sectioning but have used the X27 and/or chainsaw.
20 minutes away doesn't sound too far. 6 cord would take me 18 trips just carrying 1/3 in the bed (no trailer) so now that makes it far. But if noone takes the wood and you get permission I'd say just go and get it 2-4 trips a weekend or whenever you can. Or get some buddies with trucks to come with you.
