That's funny on one hand however on the other I just did something like that a couple days ago. I was out scrounging and found a beech blow down with some punk at the top and base. I did a test cut below the top punk and it was primo wood. I already had a load in the truck and wanted to grab a different saw so I piled leaves and branches in front of the fresh cut (the tree was about 60' uphill however anyone driving by would have seen the fresh 18" diameter cut sticking out like a K-Mart blue light special). Even though I was only gone about 15-20 minutes, I'm glad I camouflaged the tree because as I was driving out to unload the truck and grab the 500i, I saw some competition heading up the forest service road. Luckily my camouflage job worked and they didn't find my score. So I laughed at your post, but then thought 'been there, done that'.
Holy chit! In my defense i get off at exit 13 route 66 and never father. I wouldnt scrounge in your neighborhood either. Plus after a full days work im beat and scrounging wood goes by the wayside. You getting it Joe?
Dont know if you a familiar with black locust EODMSgt, but it can sit for many many years and not rot. Outlast pressure treated wood 3 to 1.
I've looked for black locust up here but have never come across any and have never burned any (to my knowledge). Good to learn about the life expectancy of dead and down black locust though. Thanks for passing on the knowledge.
Sure I’ll go after it. The stuff on the bottom looks really old. Any other woods I wouldn’t pay much attention to it. Write it off as spoiled wine. As you mentioned tho BL lasts forever in most scenarios. I’ll give it a shot. Thinking Monday morning. They’re mowing that area of the highway right now. Huge crew and production LOL All trucks on deck with flashing lights and police presence just to watch one tractor mow the median. You know the drill. How much money can we spend without doing any work. It just may disappear if I leave it too long. Someone may decide this is the year to remove it. Time to break out my hard hat and safety vests and blend in with the crowd LOL
You’d need to look in areas of antiquity. Old railroad tracks, mill buildings, long abandoned farms and vacant lots in mill towns. The oldest places of civilization that remain untouched. From what I can tell you’ll never find them in a forest. I never knew what they are until I read about them here. If I had ever seen one before I probably just thought it was a Sassafras and paid no attention. Its weird but once you start hunting for them they turn up when you least expect it.
X2. You're the one who more or less brought it to my attention when i first joined FHC. There was some logs down the street and i was thinking it was chestnut oak. Now look at me! 15+ cords of the stuff.
I’m surprised you never put counterfeit State of Connecticut decals on your white Ford. Instead of wondering if someone may say something about your roadside scrounges you could own the entire road hahahahahaha. Put out cones and divert traffic even. Who knows, the state may even deliver a paycheck on Fridays
I have contemplated getting one of those "official looking" reflective vests and a white hardhat when i scrounge on state roads. My "high visiblity" T shirts and sweatshirt seem to help the effort too along with the white truck. I should get the tailgate replaced (badly dented) too.
One of the areas where I scrounge is near an old logging town (long since abandoned) that is now part of the national forest. There are some old apple trees left over from when the town was there. I'll have to look to see if there are any BL.
