I was in the local Kubota/Stihl dealer on Friday and saw their new sign. Last spring they were $8 per chain. At these prices for chain sharpening I need to make my Super Jolly go to work every day! What are folks getting for chain sharpening around you?
Geez ow...the last I checked I think they were $5 to sharpen, but its been a bit I've checked too so... The last new chain I bought from them it was something like $22 and that gets you 2 (20") BOGOF deal...
Around here, I don't know. I have never paid anyone to sharpen a chain for me. I just made up my mind to learn how to do it, myself. I do pay to get the oil changed in my truck, though, because I hate rolling around under my vehicles if I can help it.
Heck never checked, but a buddy said it was about 7$ per chain last time he got some done. I sharpen my own and even new is 20$ for 30” bar, and about 25$ for 24” bar. At that cost I just buy more and rotate them. When they get real bad I toss em or use em on stumps and roots. At that cost I’d just order a bunch at bailey’s and be done.
Buy a grinder... do your own!! $15 for someone that might grind aggressively causing you to buy more. Unless I smoke a rock etc, I just touch up and get many grinds. I remember as a kid the first and last time we took them to the Stihl shop.... they were sharp but they got them hot and took out a lot of metal. I highly suggest a diamond blade as well.
I have a Super Jolly grinder now, with a dimond wheel, one of the best tools I've ever purchased. Before that I used a Timberline sharpener, I was never much good with a file. I think I've only paid to have chains sharpened 2 or three times, and that was a very long time ago when I thought $4 per chain was high!
Holy crap! $15 to sharpen a chain?!?!? (The last chains i bought were $23) Last time i got some sharpened at my local Stihlership they charged $8 to grind away half the cutters. He literally used up half the cutters or more. He told me one chain was ground too far already and he couldn't sharpen it so i only got 2 of my 3 chains back. I've since learned to sharpen...ffen thief...
My guy only charges $6 a chain. 15 for a sharpening is ridiculous. I've been using the pferd 2 in 1 sharpener and only take them to get sharpened of they really get rocked. Now, I suppose a home chain grinder would be a very handy tool. Once I'm done with dinner projects around the house, I should get one.
Sharpening by hand isn’t that hard. I can do a 20” loop in no more than 5 minutes. Compare that to driving to the sharpening guy to drop off chain(s) driving home, driving back to the sharpening guy, paying 10 bucks, and driving back home. Talking at least an hour of time, plus the 10 bucks per chain, PLUS the down time unless you have other chains ready to cut. One of the first things a chainsaw user should learn is how to sharpen a chain with a hand file.
My local saw shop does it for 8 bucks a chain-but that's using a robot grinder that evens up the chain, and doesn't heat the metal so you can't cut it with a file. I've seen chains sharpened on a grinder that you couldn't scratch a tooth with a file, it was so work hardened. I only have them sharpen a chain if I booger it bad and it has more then 1/2 the tooth left.
Yeah, sounds like they don't want to be sharpening many chains.... Does that place ship?? That's the best I've heard since the buy 10 for $10 ea at baileys....and that's been awhile...
I would think so...not sure though, would have to check...its an amish Toro and Stihl dealership Link... https://schlabachengine.stihldealer.net/
