Give me a free service and I'll dictate how you do it. Takes discipline not to get nasty.

Free firewood available. Must arrive on location here Saturday May 8th between 8:36 and 8:43AM. Imperative you arrive with 2 saws, one small Echo and a 60+cc Stihl. Husqvarna saws will be considered upon a $1200 non-refundable deposit. Wood must be felled within the boundaries I marked on the ground. I took the time to measure the trunk precisely and laid out a drop zone with a 1/8” buffer zone all around it. Should be an easy job for anyone knowing what they’re doing. Wood to be bucked between 16.3125” and 16.375” and entire job finished by 10:23 that morning as I have guests coming for tea at 10:30 who would be appalled at chainsaw noise. Lastly, my daughter has dance recital at 11 and you are obligated to drop her off there, stopping at Dunkin Donuts along the way to buy her a Coolatta. If there isn’t enough whipped cream on it you’ll be hearing from my attorney. Thank you and have a blessed day.

Brad, not calling. In a firewood deprived/high demand area, above ad MAY have some merit. Around here, it is totally ridiculous. There will be 10x more ads with free rounds on the roadside or yard where you can drive truck next to and chunk or roll rounds into the bed. No, this dweeb needs to pay a tree service.
    Eric - excellent scenario!

I cut on a neighbors property last year and it was tough. Decent wood, but he wanted the stumps cut flush with the ground. I was polite but clear that ruining bars and chains made no sense, and I showed him how low I could go. His saw was filler than a teaspoon.....I wonder why right. I took a few loads and politely declined the rest. It was taking too much time to do things his way, and time is hard to come by. I had the same fun with another neighbor, but finally got mad and asked him to stand back and watch before he ended up dead. I was kinda rough, but I kicked the leaves away from the ground from a large top. I said this is where you want to stand right. I moved where I told him and gravity wins again as the top landed half in the circle of leaves. He stopped micromanaging after that! I prefer my own ground!!!! My rules, and I stay safe. I know not everyone has that luxury, but landowners can be a total pain!!

I've responded to a few of those ads when bored. I'll start by asking where the firewood is in the picture. Those are trees, firewood is cut, split & normally stacked or piled. I'll usually put a price for chop & drop, then the price for complete clean up etc. Only ever heard back from one & she was pizzed. I explained to her that those trees are yard waste/ hazards until they're felled & processed into firewood. She insisted they were valuable, I responded that yes ma'am they're worth about $ 1500.00 of your money for me to remove them. Never heard another word, go figure.

My favorite are the ones where they have a few random poles and they demand no machinery or cutting on site. Like me and a dozen burly men will come and whisk your logs away without spreading any evil sawdust.

I suspect a lot of these ads go up after they talk to the tree service and don’t like what they hear.

I don't think that's all that crazy. The ones I laugh at show trees right next to a house and say the firewood is free for anyone licensed, bonded, and insured who wants to cut them down, and all the brush has to be removed.

50' tall Beech trees for firewood, furniture etc. You cut barter...
2 total 50 foot tall by 5 feet diameter trunk Beech trees. Great hardwood. Lumber and wood tripled in price and going higher. Use for firewood or build furniture or sell it by the cord or mill it etc....... You cut them down in trade for the free wood, otherwise known as bartering. Plenty of room to fell them. 30 to 60 feet away from structures. Plenty of room to back up truck, trailer etc... to take them. Take one or both. Must know how to fell or climb trees. Available any day, all day, all week, any week including weekends from 8am to 8pm until all gone.

blacktail "Plenty of room to fell them" ... 50 foot tall tree with a structure 30 feet away, to say nothing of the fence 12 inches from the stump. Yup, what could possibly go wrong?

More seriously, what happens when this goes sideways with major cost to property or life after the homeowner invited an amateur onto his property to do something commonly known to be dangerous?
