Yeah that’s a 30”+ DBH red oak that fell last August. The tree was a double and one trunk came down in my yard and the other landed in my neighbor’s. That’s the property line right behind the pallet shed. He said to help myself to it so at some point later this year I’ll get to it. There’s all sorts of downed trees on both sides of the neighboring yards I could go after.
Do you know a guy with a big saw or saws??? Glad to help you on those. If you want to attack them before the leaves come out let me know. We'll set up a day or days!

Added to the wall of Locust today with some of the recent “downtown” score. It’s probably safe to say I reached the vertical limit and it’s time to expand elsewhere, should I continue bringing home more BL. Just realized the funny colored streak on the picture. Maybe it wasn’t gold at the end of the rainbow, but BTU golden wood?
Half measures availed us nothing.... Sorry, I should’ve taken a before picture. In my pallet shed I had a mix of oak, sugar and red maple splits, along with small and ugly chunks. I haphazardly tossed everything in, resulting in an ugly pile with pieces that slid out and onto the ground every few days. Today I fixed it by taking everything out and stacking it for real. Lo and behold I gained quite a bit of space that way. The perfect amount of space for some box elder that was out in the elements. Lesson learned: it’s worth doing it right the first time around.
I go back and forth on this concept. Yes, it is good to get things done the right way, the first time. I have learned that this is the best approach sometimes, and yes, I have had to re-do things in the past. I also love the phrase- "done is better than perfect". ...Taking care of an old house, kids, wife, family, jobs... you name it. If I can toss some logs into the woodshed and move on to another project, sign me up.
I hear you there... I'm sure my wife would rather see me scrubbing the toilet downstairs than stacking more wood LOL. You're right though, there's no shortage of things we could be doing besides building elaborate wood piles. It's all a balancing act between the many roles we take on simultaneously.
“Scored” on my lunch break today. White Birch bark, just about the best natural fire starter material you can have IMHO. Out walking in the woods on my break I spotted a standing dead white birch. Grabbed a good amount to start with, and I’ll get a little at a time whenever I’m nearby. Not too prolific a tree in my area so I get disproportionately excited when I’m able to “score” some. I do have a small pile of white birch splits at home for this winter, enough for about 3-4 days of burning anyway.
I can empathize. There has not been a year where I don't rethink/rework how I stage the logs/rounds to be processed and where I stack the splits. The old 'principles of motion economy' goes out the window as I'm always reinventing the wheel. Then there is that dang squirrel. I'll stack a bunch of rounds or logs to be processed but then that shiny object (squirrel) shows up and off I go on a different project that requires me to relocate the entire pile of logs/rounds.
Got my wall of Locust covered up today. By the best of my measurements there’s about 1.7 cord in there, which I think is enough to say I have some black locust in my stacks. Some of it was processed at the tail end of last summer, some in the fall, some of it this spring. Who knows when I’ll get around to burning it. It’ll be ready around the same time as the bulk of my red oak so by then I’ll have some real luxury problems
More rearranging in the monsoon today. Why wait for the perfect, sunny, DRY September day to move wood in when you can do it on an unseasonably cold WET day in May? Once again I’m rethinking my process. When fall comes it’s all I can do to keep up with the leaf cleanup so I figured do this now and be done until it’s time to bring more in. There’s mostly black birch under the deck and Aspen just outside the back door, which will be the first thing I burn in the fall. Probably a cord altogether between the two areas so not bad. I hung a couple more corrugated plastic roof panels under the deck on Thursday to divert the water from above.
Looking real good there Eric. Gotta make room for primo red oak heartwood splits to come. Ive been debating on going cutting where im working but really dont wanna get that wet. Rain started up again and i checked the radar and no end. Maybe go BTTW tomorrow.
