Step up above Stihl MS250?

Tim, im going to my OPE dealer today and ask if they'll finance an MS400. When i tell them im willing to pay $5.00 per month for ten years i think ill get or
Seriously i like the way you look at it. Another reason for me to justify buying one.

 

That would be $1722 if you pay $1000 for the saw on finance at 12% for 10 years.
Or $14.35/month.

 

Lennyzx11 I am more of a Husky guy but for what it is worth I would definitely go with a pro saw as to which one ??? I personally would choose the saw with the most power to weight just my $0.02.

 

Zero complaints about the 550xp I just picked up recently , other than limited time that I have been able to cut since getting it.

And that's coming from a Stihl Guy.

Lennyzx11 this is real simple 8 cord a year is no joke and YOU are NOT getting younger.
Get a pro saw!!
Then get to a GTG and run a ported pro saw.
Then place a wanted ad in classified here!
Then get a few offers from great guys and there you go!

 

I know money is ALWAYS the determining factor. We all have a budget.
My point is, it a $300-700-800 decision. None of those numbers are that big. It's not a $70,000 dollar truck.
For three hundred you might be buying someone else's headache. For 700 or so you're getting an excellent new machine with dealer support and a lightweight high power saw that will last for you and your kid.

And! If i bought a pos off of Craig's or market place and found that it was stolen or had hidden problems...I'd be fit to be tied!!! And twice as pizzed if i had to spend more money on used chit!!!

Save time and the potential headaches and go get you a nice happy-birthday-to-me saw.
You'll thank us later.

 

huskihl , you still have that nearly new makita 6100 ? If so, that's a smokin deal for a pro saw and a big savings over the 362's $750 piece tag.

I don’t know anything about the makita. I know stihl, husky, dolmar, and some echos.
You guys vouch for a makita?

Makita has owned Dolmar since the 90’s. This saw is in fact made by Dolmar

I'm very happy with my 250 with a muffler mod. I also bought a new 362 CM a year ago and just did a MM on it too. VERY happy with that saw as well. I modded the oil pump so it will oil a 32" bar now and it pulls it ok for occasional use. It may do better with the larger bar after a base gasket delete and a little dremel work. I run a 25" light bar on it a lot and am pretty happy with that. With the 18" bar on it I can do most of the stuff I need to around here and it is a beast with that bar on it and only a couple pounds more than the 250.

Overall I'm very happy with these 2 saws, but the MM did make a real difference and is worth it to spend a little time on those mufflers with a drill and dremel. Easy DIY MM on both of those models and can keep the spark arrestor in place.

I did see a 372 XP at family Home and Farm today for 899 I think, but got a chuckle when I walked up to look at it closer.





I guess assembling display models is an entry level position at this store... LOL

 

Husqvarna safety chain

 

Chain speed in wood is remarkably increased.

 

We used an 026 and a 359 Husqvarna until an accident and some abuse prematurely ended the 359. It was an older version of the 555.It was a good running saw but I had trouble starting it.I later learned the fault may well have been mine.
Bought an MS362 to replace the 359 and have been very happy with it. Also got an MS 250 to use while I wait for a decision on rebuilding my 026.Really happy with it. A much better saw than it should be for a homeowner series saw.
My 362 and 250 do everything I need to do although, if I were cutting a lot of large diameter trees, I might have been happier with a 441 or 462. Most of my cutting is 20" or less.

 

I have both a 260 pro and a 362 and a 391 and have run larger and smaller saws all my life. I'm an older Gent. If I could only have one saw for the rest of my life I would go with the 362 with 20" and 28" light weight bar. It will not kill your back. It is nimble enough for limbing with the 20" bar. The 20" will also handle most normal firewood cutting and will do it with authority. It is probably the only bar you need. With the 28" bar it will handle larger wood (probably larger than most would care to handle). It won't be a ball of fire but it will do the job. In my opinion, unless you are a professional for sale firewood cutter, you would never need another saw and even if you were professional, it would be your most used saw. I can't say enough good things about the 260 class saws but if you want a saw that is bigger and better yet, try a 362! My 2 cents worth!

 

I'm still looking. Trying to not walk into the Stihl dealer because I know what I'll do.

That’s close to new retail price. If I was going to spend that much I’d get a 461.

 

The Makita 6100 I posted earlier is now sold. I also have a new Echo 7310 for sale if interested. I opened the box to make sure there was no damage and that is how it sits under the bench. $700 plus shipping. I’ll get pics of the saw if you’re interested
