Last weekend i spotted a couple small standing dead trees near the ash i cut. Rain ended early yesterday, dried some so the 261, X27, wheelbarrow and i made out way down to get my fix. Turns out both barkless sugar maple! Not something commonly seen. Tree one was smaller, but a bit too far gone for my liking. Tree two the meat was mostly good. Didnt see theses until i grabbed it to split. Split it all in the woods. Stack in back is some the ash from last weekend. Last load out was a big one. Moved the rest of the basswood from January too. Turkey (i think) feather i found on the trail. Turkeys a regular sighting around here. There are several EAB killed ash in immediate area i will eventually harvest. Classic "D" borer hole. First for me harvesting standing dead SM that i can recall.
Sweet score!!!! Real men hoard with wheelbarrows, but not me. I have a tree not far from my house I will get soon and post. Lightning took it out last summer. The bark is peeling almost top to bottom. It about 16 -18 inches in diameter. Hit any ant nests? That maple looks prime for a carpenter ant nest score !!!
No ants but has lots of "micro" borer tunnels. The first round i bucked at the bottom was mostly punk and rest good. The only other SD ive harvested in there is oak. There is birch and beech too.
That's the thing with standing dead wood. Just how close is it to being there too long? Looks solid Sounds solid Splits solid.. but looks funny.
Great pic of the EAB hole. Gives scale and something for me to scout for. I haven’t noticed any yet. 10 years ago the farm up the road harvested a lot of Ash to get $$ before it arrived. Lots of lumber! I know it’s close, but I haven’t seen the signs yet. That is a crisp D.
