This tree is in a friend's yard. It's not coming down, he enjoys the shade. I just curious to what it might be. It looks like it might be a big but right there. About as much zoom as I could get. Beautiful tree. Looks like a Chestnut to me, although which variety I don't know. Hopefully it's an American Chestnut, which would really be something special.
Sure looks like it - Horse chestnut likely. the fruits are covered in a spiny case when green. American chestnut few and far between due to a disease or bug that wiped most of them out years ago. There are a few groves around here and there quite rare.
It doesn’t look like the trunk of a Horsechestnut to me. Bark is too light. I can get a pic of horse chestnut tomorrow for comparison. If it’s a Chinese chestnut, it’s the biggest one I’ve seen.
Leaves and bark look like American Chestnut. Can you get a better close up of the leaves and the spiny nut cases? I've never seen one that size. The fungal chestnut blight from Asia killed of most all of them. Some survive from stump sprouts.
I only saw a couple burs on it and they were way up high. Didn't see any on the ground, but wasn't really looking. I can try to get a better pic of the leaves.

I have found American Chestnut in 6 counties of PA on my treks in the mountains. Some of them were large enough to produce nuts. Next week I will visit with one I have been watching in Bedford County. It has multiple shoots coming up from the roots. Last year it had some burrs and no sign of the blight yet. Decades ago there was one in Clinton County that was 8" at the butt and over 30' tall on private property. It died from the blight. I have not been back to see if shoots came up from the roots.
We had Chinese chestnut trees at my parents. (About a dozen). They definitely don't get that big. The stumps are only about 16" across (after 60 + years) they might reach 30-40' tall.
Thats a decent horsechestnut tree. See how the leaves come out at the end of the branch. Jeff's come off the side of the branch and alternate.
