Wood Species, Identify, please

Here's a couple pictures of a stick of firewood, which has came into question on what it is. At first, I thought it was some kind of Oak, but then I saw a picture of an Ash and kind of think it is Ash, but my son in law, who is in the forest service, did not think it was Ash, after seeing a picture. He thought it might be Elm, but I kind of doubted it that, as I was able to split it by hand with a splitting maul.

So, my curiosity is up, looking for answers.

Looks like ash to me. Then again. Every bit of wood I've been processing is ash.

Ok, so it looks like the general consensus is that it is probably Ash. I thought it might be. I had several other logs that were Hickory and it looked different to me then the known for sure, Hickory did.

 

Not at this time.

Looks like Ash to me - I’m NO expert.

 

Lastmohecken if you still have access to the splits or rounds check for a center pith. If so its ash (ive only cut the green and white varieties that im aware of and dont know if all ash varieties have the center pith), if not IMO its hickory. Ash round i cut on Sunday.

 

That's interesting, I will go and take a look at my wood stacks, and see, however, all of it is split, so I might have more trouble seeing the pith, but maybe not.

 

I have some locust, cherry and big ash rounds that are not split. Only the ash has the pith.

You are quite welcome sir! Walnut and tree of heaven also have the center pith. Im sure there are others but those two come to mind.

Here's some pictures I took this afternoon, of maybe Ash, I don't know. Do you see any Ash in any of these pictures, or is it Hickory, etc?

 

Dont see anything that resembles ash. No center pith to be seen.

 

Ok, thanks, I guess it's Hickory mostly, then, not that it matters much.

 

Much better btu's in hickory despite the longer seasoning time.
