I know there are some women in here but this really is just a warning for the guys. I had something happen for the first and hopefully last time ever while working earlier today. I almost always use the drop start method when I start my saws and since I pick up each log with the forks on the tractor I am constantly restarting my saw. Well I went to my normal drop start method and as the pull cord recoiled, it snapped up and hit me directly on my right nut! Ouch!! After about 30 seconds or so of some extreme discomfort I chuckled a little and was thinking wtf? Has this happened to anyone else?? I can laugh about it now but it was quite shocking at first! As the title says, stay safe out there men!
FHC version of blue balz??? Never hit the "boys" like that as i dont use that starting method. I have hit them with the axe handle if i choke up on it (the axe LOL!!!) and the handle has got me during the swing. I noticed your voice was higher pitched though Joe!!! Always a first for everything!
I rarely drop start, but I do sit on a stool while splitting and more than once a block of wood has fallen towards me and crushed a piece of skin that is full of blood vessels.
I think most guys who drop start do it to avoid bending over or kneeling (back or knee issues) or... the saw is reluctant to start, and being able to hold the trigger helps it start easier. Glad you're ok Jrider. That's absolutely nuts!!!
Lol!! I use the drop start method because I really do stop and start my saw between every load of logs on the forks. If I cut for two hours, that could mean 20+ starts
I was once using a big D handled drill with a 1" cork screw auger bit in it. As I pulled the bit from the wood to clear the chips, I lost my footing, the drill swung around and caught my jeans in my crotch. Unfortunately it also had a little flap of ME in the jeans. I immediately let off the trigger but those big drills take several turns to wind down. My work partner says the tighter the drill wound my jeans and....well...my stuff, the higher pitched my scream got. It wound so tight that the jeans and my stuff actually unwound against the resistance of the gear reduction of the (now unpowered) drill! I couldn't walk right for a week. Believe me, I feel your pain jrider. I hope it doesn't happen again especially while you are still tender.
I always start saws with the handle cradled between my thighs and left arm locked. Very stable position that keeps you from having to bend over. However, I have had the pull rope smack tender areas..usually due to thinking I dont need to press decompression, and being wrong. Have never seen the reason to drop start a saw.
Not from the saw, but had a piece of Ash flex and shoot off and peg me right there. Dropped in me right there. My FIL still brings it up.
Suggestion for future swag shop inventory, limited edition ball sak kup. W/ FHC logo embossed or burnt in.
