The grain and density are comparable to Eastern white pine IMO. Rather heavy when green but dries feather light. Easiest splitting wood ive ever hand split. I was one handing with the X27. Not something i recommend but tried and it split!
I don’t know about brenndatomu, but for myself I don’t go to far out of my way to cut green elm. I never set out to “go cut some green elm for firewood” But if someone else is cutting it and is willing to bring it to me instead of the dump I will gladly take it. Or someone has some that needs dealt with and gets ahold of me. That being said, next weekend myself and the neighbor across the street that heats with wood will be taking down a 3/4 dead elm for the village, and will split the booty. As for fresh cut green, I’ll leave it in the rounds for close to a year. Then it splits much better and the bark will fall off.
Thanks, I'll try that. My splitter won't care either way, but if I can get it to split cleaner in another year, I can wait it out. I probably won't be burning any of this fresh elm until 2024-2025 anyway.
Haha I know... it went through the dead stuff alright but a few times I could tell it was struggling, especially on crotch pieces.
Last I got was from an agreement to clear a fencerow for a neighbor...had to take it all...lots of variety in that score!
Yep, crotches! The farther ahead I get on my hoarding, the more uglies and crotch pieces go to the shop I work at. ( don’t care as much about neat stacks there)

Just texted a neighbor behind me who's budding in the firewood hoarding world. Looks like he's got a couple cords out back, all hand split oak and hickory. He's going to take the Tree Of Heaven. We're going to work the score together on Saturday. Heck, he can have the rest of the Locust too if he's into it. I got the last green elm log out of there today. I've been looking out at my stacks recently, and really.... I'm not hurting for wood He could use it more than me. Younger guy, maybe late 20s, wife and daughter. Have at it man, I'll give you a hand. I'm paying this one forward.

None of my neighbors burn wood. Too much work. Kind of funny considering one of them has been out of work for the last five weeks. Some people will shovel chit for $10/hr. to feed their families, others refuse anything under a 100k office job.
LOL I'm sure eventually his wife will come to view me as the neighborhood "pusher"... the kook that turned her husband into a jittery maniac always fiending for the next fix He can have the BL. I have enough farwood for at least the next 3 years, probably more. Good spot to be in.
Paying that forward will always pay you back in spades for sure! Good on ya! Now get the kid to join FHC & we'll make sure his wife thinks he cracked.
We may need a sub forum for the firewood widows. The poor gals that drive around with the guys always looking out the window uttering wooooood.
