I haven't had the chance to get out yet this year to start my 2021 scrounging, so when a friend said he had flagged some trees for me I was glad to finally get the saws out yesterday. Ended up cutting down five trees (with well over a dozen or more left to go). Four were smaller trees (that I know many on here would look down their nose at) however it was all green hardwood and I never turn down green beech. The ash was a great bonus. The kicker was that I could just load my gear in the trailer, hop on the ATV, and drive across the street from my house to access his property. Added what I cut to the round pile that I didn't get to before the snow fell last winter. Then, to top it off, I received a text from a local arborist yesterday evening who said he could bring a load of hardwood by today. Backed his dump trailer in and dropped the logs right in my processing area! Great way to start timber scrounge 2021. I'm sitting on 11+ cords of CSS hardwoods so everything I'm getting this season will be for 3+ years out (unless we have long brutal winters).
Couldnt have started better IMO! I like smalls and so does my back. How much you think you got cord wise in that load?
I've just seen some posts where people say they don't touch trees under a certain diameter. Must be nice to have that luxury.
Never was too good at estimating that by looking at the logs/rounds however a rough guesstimate of what I cut yesterday plus what was dropped off today would be roughly a little over cord. There's a lot of great beech in there so I'm a happy camper.
This is your lucky day. You should take the time to go buy a lottery ticket before your luck changes.
I love Beech and have only gotten it when I had to noodle it in quarters to move it. I’d almost pay money for what you have,,,,,almost. Good for you!
Beech is my go to up here since we have so much of it locally. The pic below was my first scrounge of last year (I don't usually come across beech of that size so I was stoked). Lots of uglies from these rounds! They may not stack well but they'll burn great in '22! Looking forward to getting a lot more this season.
Nothing wrong with that. I try to stay above 4” if it’s not to much I will go to 2”, it’s had better be easy.
Nice scores, all of them. I cut the trees down to roughly 2-3 inches in diameter. Makes good shoulder season wood, plus I fill the voids in my piles with it. I certainly don’t want piles of it in one spot, but it so burns. That green beech is some heavy stuff right!!!!
That's some good sized Beech! We don't see them that big in SoVT either. I believe they get a fungus on them and the bark gets really bumpy. Most around here make it to about 8-10" in diameter then they start to fall in the wind. I actually have one up back I'll need to cut; it blew over in the wind a few weeks back.
