Phenomenon I’ve noticed during my years of selling some wood on the side is firewood selling naysayers. Ran into several people over the years who, after finding out I sell firewood, want to downplay it and talk about how it isn’t worth the time. Of course the father in law is the worst of them all. We’re sitting around on the deck yesterday for a visit and my son and I start telling him about our plans for his firewood bundle stand this spring. As usual, nothing good to say about it. Just talks about how it’ll probably just get stolen. I said, “ oh, so we just shouldn’t do it?” Lincoln then says, “ no, I wanna do it anyway”. I was proud of him, and told him on the way home that there may be some that gets stolen, but that we would have to decide how much loss we could tolerate and still continue to sell. The value for me is in my son helping produce a product that he then sells. The value is in my son creating habits/routines to make sure that his firewood stand remains stocked, taking any money out each night That he has earned with his two hands. Why are so many young people nowadays not productive and still living with their parents well into their 20’s? It’s because few want to do anything hard! So if my son wants to learn how to sweat and work hard.....heck, if I have to sneak down to the firewood stand at night to buy all his product or pay for anything that is stolen, I’m gonna do it and I’m gonna encourage him to do it, because it is creating patterns that will serve him well the rest of his life.
Good for him and you! Work ethic is sadly about as common as common sense lately... Learning hard work pays off and if you want something you have to work for it is one of the best lessons you can teach!
Thanks Chris F People are, by far, mostly supportive, but it’s the naysayers that sometimes get under your skin!
Yep, carry on. From personal experience the naysayers probably think your wasting your time with lowly pursuits. Also from personal experience I just don’t care. LOL
Alot of folks just plain don't understand our love of chainsaws and firewood! It's ok, I'm gonna keep doing it anyway.
Heck yeah do it anyway. Then when you have your father in law over for the holidays and he's sitting there drinking a beer, point out to him that the extra money you made from firewood paid for that beer. Remind him you made some vows to his daughter that you were going to take care of her by any means necessary and that you're a man of your word. Or just do it and let the results speak for themselves.
Not sure why the FIL was so negative like you said even if it flops its a learning experience. Harbor frieght sells dummy cameras for like $5.99 fyi.
Congrats on teaching your son a good work ethic. This small job will lead into many bigger and better ones to come
I’m right there with you. I do what I do cause I want to do it; sometimes, not even because it makes sense I don’t care as long as it’s not affecting my kid! My son really values his grandpas words, and I was all ready to go papa bear on his azz! Thankfully, it appears he values mine more
I’ll have to pick one of those up! Thanks for the lead I told my son that if too much gets stolen, we could put up a sign that read: “ you’ve stolen from a child....how about coming back to the house to try your hand at stealing from his dad!” He didn’t think that was a good idea
Good stuff Haftacut Remember, we have another son selling firewood in jrider ’s boy- plenty of stories to trade and reinforce you and your boy.
As has been said, you're obviously a great dad. I've found many people are negative & find fault because it seems easier to try drag a man down to their level rather than put in the work to raise their own. I'm going to start a logging & firewood business this year as well. Why you ask? Because my grandson loves working in the woods & running the skidder. I need a firewood business like I need another hole in my head, but that doesn't matter, the kid loves it, so C & P Logging & Firewood will be born. That's Case & Papa btw.
That’s awesome ac! I started out doing it to heat my home. Kept doing it because I enjoyed it. Started selling it to fund toys, and now to teach my son hard work and how it feels good and pays off. I think my son and your grandson are gonna be alright Cant wait to hear how it’s going with the new business!
