I used my brother's diesel to pull a tree service dump trailer full of wood. The tree service guy said he had a pintle hitch for a 2" receiver hitch. Well, the thing stuck out so far I was nervous. I got home and noticed the reinforcing ring had cracked who knows how many years ago and the tube was deforming under the leverage. I am glad it didn't fail on the road, because that would have been a mess. I popped the old ring off with a screwdriver. Scary stuff. The tube still looked pretty good, so I cut a 2" wide ring and welded it on. I drilled a new pin hole behind the chain rings so the pintle adapter could slide all the way in. I now feel confident about pulling that trailer down the road. Why companies design hitches to stick out so far is beyond me. The leverage is insane. I like mine tucked right in tight to the bumper for strength and stability.
Glad that the damage discovery was uneventful and that you were able to repair it. I totally agree with you about the excessive projection of the insert! Nice clean save there.
We brought 4 more loads home today for a total daily haul of about 8 cord. That puts us close to 7 years ahead. Now we have to cut, split, and stack it all.
