So was finishing up this row and when to rock the cage forward to get the splits closer to where I could reach...oomph! Turns out it was FROZEN to the ground. Would not budge.
Any taller and I need a ladder or a bucket haha. That height gives me exactly a ½ cord for every row of splits so I like the easy math that way. It’s all the way up in the back at that height. With that height, each bay would hold 6 cords.
Depends on your definition of small...they are in the smaller side intentionally for faster dry times.
I don't know how long you've been burning, but I'm sure you know that the larger the piece, the longer it lasts right? If you need the wood to dry quickly, I guess the three year plan has not yet been implemented??
Yep. I do know the bigger the piece, the longer burn. As far as duration, you can go back to start of this thread but it’ll be a long read lol. Appreciate the friendly advice. I don’t have a burn duration problem since the house is still 70-71 when I get up in the morning. I suppose enough coals to hot start the next day would be nice but often we get the greenhouse effect and don’t need to burn during the day unless dead of winter. 3 year plan has been achieved twice actually after selling most of it off the first time. Timing was good and I kept enough to not be out. 3 year old oak has been this years duel. It’s not that I need a faster dry time, I’m in good shape supply wise. I think these are within acceptable range, even if on the smaller side of the range To each their own. I have a stove on the smaller side and thick splits are harder to squeeze in.
My stuff tends to be smaller too. Several reasons for it....my customers tend to like handling the smaller stuff, and my wife does too. Each time I load the furnace, enough wood is transported From the garage to the basement to load. She loads it before bed on the nights that I am working. I load it all other times. Most often, I have the wood in the basement for her. May end up burning a bit more, but that doesn’t matter to me. Love your wood shed. 6 cord per bay is a hefty amount. Here’s some of my stuff. Pretty representative of the size I split. Maybe a little bigger but not much.
Well I got another wood hoarding merit badge this week thanks to my tree service buddy... and it was two loads. Zoom in to see the water bottle for scale
Well Matt kind of kills the whole “adventures” part of the thread. BUT if put like that I guess I would have to take it too!!
And with that response, please turn in your hoarders card..... "Unless it's free and delivered, I have to say no!"
Certainly does take the fun out of the roadside scores. Have you seen the log piles I’ve got to buck? Haha I got another message today from a guy down the street for more wood on Saturday. I’m going to need a commercial splitter.
Well the guy down the street had me grab the maple and ash tree he had taken down after a big limb hit his truck. I told him to cut them to 4’ lengths and I’d drive the tractor down and load my truck. Nope... he cut them to like 18 or so... and it was a huge maple. My legs are a little sore from all the lifting. It took 4 pick up loads. I had my 28” bar buried on a couple of rounds near the brace. Anybody want some large maple rounds? Will load your truck!
